The Godfather is as good as it gets. Crash is pretentious junk in comparison

At least The Fountain had some great characters and plot to go along with it's "pretensions" (Which I don't think it's pretending anything BTW).

There is no such thing as a pretentious movie. To put it simple : Cause that would mean the filmmaker aimes for more then what we get. Only one person knows if that's actually the case ... the filmmaker. Therefore a pretentious movie is nothing more then what we make of it when we have the impression it tries to be about more then we are able to get out of it.

One of my faves "The Fountain" is called pretentious. I would think about "The New World". But somehow I realise it's just not fair to call it pretentious. Since I have no clue of what the actual intention is. I could guess, but I don't know for sure.

Don't get how a documentary of an event, that doesn't really stray from what actually happened is pretentious.

One of my favorite films of last year and on my top list is most definitely considered pretentious by many, Only God Forgives

Anyone mentioned Lars VonTrier and his movies yet?
Don't complain Kubrick isn't around anymore when you have Fincher.

I think the word 'pretentious' is a lot like 'hipster' in the sense that it's a word that often gets used to describe something a person doesn't like. If I was an alien coming to this planet and I checked out the internet for a couple of hours, I would assume that the entire world was either 'pretentious', a hipster or perverted (or some combination of the three).

'Pretentious', I think, really gets applied when people can't get into a film but they see that the film is trying to do something different. When you can't get into a more "difficult" film, it feels willfully obtuse - like the filmmaker is trying to exclude you.

In other words, I love The Fountain AND The Tree of Life. If you don't like them, cool. I get it. Don't force yourself to rewatch them until you "get it". There is not much to get. They are pretty simple movies. You will just wind up hating them more. If you do like them, well then they are gorgeous blu rays and Tree of Life is available through the Foxconnect sale right now! $6.50 and it comes with a digital copy!

I dont see Melancholia as pretentious. Its the only one of his films I own though and I cant see that changing!

For pretentious see Terrence Malick. And for insomnia see Terrence Malick as well.

It really wasn't good or bad imo it was just there, but I don't think the film itself is pretentious. Some of the reviews of it most certainly are, though. Sheesh.

I think "Oscar-Bait" is a better term.

And for that, I'd say The Reader.

I always thought that James78's post about pretention was very insightful and probably the best post.

Just to add a bit more, here is a quote from Ionesco 'Bald Soprano':

MARY: I'm going to recite a poem, then, is that agreed? It is a poem entitled "The Fire" in honor of the Fire Chief:

The Fire
The polypoids were burning in the wood
A stone caught fire
The castle caught fire
The forest caught fire
The men caught fire
The women caught fire
The birds caught fire
The fish caught fire
The water caught fire
The sky caught fire
The ashes caught fire
The smoke caught fire
The fire caught fire
Everything caught fire
Caught fire, caught fire.
[She recites the poem whie the Smiths are pushing her off-stage.]

MRS. MARTIN: That sent chills up my spine...

MR. MARTIN: And yet there's a certain warmth in those lines...

FIRE CHIEF: I thought it was marvelous.

End of quote

The appreciation of art is always subjective. I would just hate to be the fire chief.

pretentious - attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. Hipster is just chasing after people's ego about what is cool - heaven forbit you don't own the right shade of red jacket or you hair isn't trimmed just right.

sounds like a lot of movies out there. For me, it is Drive. Everyone talks about all the hidden and extra meanings but it is a boring movie that should have been made in the 1980's. It is just lame. And the JJ trek films (sorry, couldn't resist).
