Default BD Player Woes

Long story short: My Sony BDP-S350 finally stopped working so I went to Frys and Best Buy looking for a new player.

At BB, I bought a Sony BDP-S390 - It was terrible! There was no time display on the front, It froze up and the unit itself felt like it was constructed poorly.

I took it back and got a Panasonic DMP-BD871 and so far it's limited in online functions and has an awkward main menu. The remote is one of the most ridiculously laid out devices I've ever seen; it's not compatible with non-Panasonic TVs and the unit shuts off after being on pause too long.

I don't buy electronics online ever and I am stuck going to the brick and mortar stores close to me: Best Buy, Frys and (shudder) Sears. I know this makes it harder but it's just the way it goes.

Can anyone help me find a good, alternative please?
Any other advice, etc would be much appreciated.

I'm debating taking the Panny back and getting a Sammy but I'm hearing all sorts of bad things about those as well. I loved my original Sony but I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to.

I just want a functioning BD player that isn't a total piece of crap and so far I haven't been able to find a decent one.

Bite the bullet and buy an Oppo - you will never regret the purchase and it will work on every disk - all the time. Great features as well. You get what you pay for and with the Oppo brand it is definitely the case.

Just checked out Oppo's website and while they look impressive, those prices are way too high for me...for now.

On another note, I debated trying the 3D Sony that looks like the S390. I'm wondering if they are any different besides the 3D (which I could care less about). I'm also remembering that my old S350 freezed up every now and then.

You could try the Sony BDP-790, quite some members on this forum and beyond are enthusiastic about it. It's around $250 IIRC.

So I ended up getting a Sony BDP-S590 and things have been going well...

[Show spoiler]...until tonight!

Just had an altercation with one of my favorite film's menus freezing up but otherwise, I still think I made a wise choice especially since I was able to PM Amazon at BBY and get it for $108.

Every penny well spent, I suppose.

What movie menu froze on you, I've had the 590 for several months and have had zero issue with it.

It was Taxi Driver. It really pisses me off that this happened as it's a movie I love and watch a lot.

I already tried to update firmware, which was already current.

Any other help would me much appreciated.

I don't own that movie.... I don't think I have even watched it. I'll see if the local video rental joint has it in Blu... if so I'll check it out this weekend.

Have you tried turning off any BD-Live or similar features ? IIRC, Taxi Driver pops up a "Connected" box or something similar while you are in the menu.

The only thing I can find is:
BD Viewing Settings -> BD Internet Connection -> Do Not Allow.
Is there another way to turn it off?

Wow, you don't have to go through all that trouble but if you do end up renting it, please be prepared that it's not a happy movie.
