Warner seriously needs to do a proper 4K transfer/encode onto theatrical DCP because what I saw was embarrassingly bad - hell comparing this to the bluray, the bluray is superior and that's downrezzed 2K as well. At intermission, I asked the manager if the projector was 4K, which I knew it was, but just wanted a confirmation - his response: "yes, but well, it's an old movie" [retort under breath: 'true, but it was shot in 65mm film stock']
I've heard there's a new 4k DCP coming this year.

Found this on HTF back in 2007, wondering if people think here think Robert Harris is correct in his assumption.

Quote:
The original 65mm negative of 2001 has been over-loved during the decades. Over-printed, with dupes scattered about throughout, it comes to to this new DVD in nearly transparent condition. My assumption is that this transfer is derived from a 35mm interpositive produced several years ago, and it has yielded a superb master.
If this true, then we could get an even better version of 2001 on blu-ray.

Keep in mind standards and video technology in all areas has significantly improved since 2007. A lot of transfers that looked great at that time now look medicore or even poor in some cases. 2001 on Blu-ray is one example.

50th anniversary is just 3 years away, maybe then we'll get a new remaster.

It better be in 8K because 4K would be moot at this point.

yes!! we really need a 8k transfer. Why isn't Hollywood treating 2001 with more respect? it's a national treasure of a movie.
I see you!!!!!

The best way to say it, would be,
"This movie deserves a proper 8k scan", instead of "we deserve".

Maybe that's what HD Goofnut meant?

AFAIK most of Warners' large format transfers from the early/mid Noughties were done from 35mm IP reductions because the means of transferring 65mm just weren't up to snuff, as we saw on the remastered DVD of Ben Hur which had a fair few problems.

Things have changed big time since then, and as one of the folks who's never been terribly impressed with the HD DVD/BD encode of 2001 I'd say yes, it does indeed deserve a new 8K transfer.

It also deserves a nationwide theatrical re-release for the anniversary. Not just a dozen screens in a few big cities, a real release, so all of us have a chance to see this on the big screen. Even if its just for a week, or one night only like the most recent Lawrence of Arabia reissue, 2001 deserves to be treated better.
