How did you like the first Universal Soldier if you saw it?

I rewatched this last night. It's a damn good native 3D movie. The 3D is great throughout, the movie is really nicely shot too. Very effective and impressive cinematography, camerawork and editing. I wish John Hyams would make another 3D movie.

The movie itself is very interesting and a lot of effort has been put into giving viewers something different, rather than the same old action movie. It won't be for everyone but I really appreciated the effort that had b4een put into the script and story.

The action sequences are also excellent, brutal and hard hitting, very impressive.
"Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from... but most of all we 'members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home."

I really enjoyed Universal Soldier Regeneration, despite Van Damme's rather unenthusiastic performance it seemed to revitalise the series by being much better than it had any right to be.

Given it had the same director, I expected the sequel to be more of the same but I hated it when I saw it in 2D. It was not what I expected.

I only found out that it was actually shot in 3D a year or so later, so that was reason enough to re-watch it.

I still have my issues with the film, but I do appreciate that the intention was not to repeat the same old story and more importantly, the 3D really works for the film, putting the viewer right in the headspace of the protagonist. I would never recommend this film in 2D, but in 3D it's a different experience that I'm looking forward to revisiting.
3D is not dead. What's dead is my interest in any new 2D formats or display technology.

I enjoyed it too. Definitely check it out for a brutal B movie.

Little apprehensive by the mention of extreme violence, but still looking forward to the movie in 3D. I haven't watched any of the 'Universal Soldier' movies yet.

For those interested I recommend John Hyams audio commentaries with Dolph Lundgren for the 2 films highly, as well as the making of documentary for DAY OF RECKONING (only on US edition)

That reminds me, the UK release is uncut too. Not sure about the HK release.
