This might look slightly tacky but if any of you keep BOAN in its slipcase and have trouble getting the case out of the tight fitting slip. Next time you have it out of the slip, get a ribbon or a string and have it loop around the case box as you slide it in and just pull on both ends of that string to get the case out again.

I purchased the Kino Blu-ray of The Birth of a Nation, and was compelled to watch it at last this week in light of recent controversial discussions.

If I told you that watching the second half of The Birth of a Nation did not make me feel unclean, then I would be lying. The cinematic depiction of the ideologies at play during the later scenes is quite a offensive shock for most of us who watch the movie through the lens of our contemporary mindsets. In the end, though, I agree with Roger Ebert's well-written inclusion of The Birth of a Nation in his Great Movies list, in that, despite the troubling subject matter, it is best for modern audiences to view this film in its uncensored entirety and deal with it head-on instead of simply shoving this aspect of history under the rug.

In technical terms, the movie is brilliant. To watch The Birth of a Nation is to watch one of the first instances when elements of filmmaking came together in the form of what we now consider to be standard cinema narrative. The judicious use of extras during the battle scenes, the panning camera shots, nighttime photography, and the timing of the film score in early movies like this were instrumental in the evolution of the medium. The Civil War battle sequences are still breathtaking, and, while watching them, I was in awe at the artistry involved in making these images resemble actual photographs from the war. Miriam Cooper and Lillian Gish are both fantastic in their roles, and they provide key early examples of conveying an impressive range of emotions onscreen.

The Birth of a Nation is not a movie that I will return to as often as others in my collection, but I'm glad to have seen it, and I'm glad that it sits alongside D.W. Griffith's Intolerance at my place.

Cheers to Kino for shaking the dust off of another silent epic and bringing it to Blu-ray in its restored glory.
