If it's the one I'm thinking of - totally agree! Unexpected to say the least.

Wow, were you drunk? Not drunk enough? Or did you sell your heart to the devil in exchange for hands that can play the piano like no other soul alive and, because of all the distraction, missed the actual film? I'm confused.

One of the key slashers of its day, but is anybody else as bothered as I am by all the horrendous day-for-night scenes?

I don't remember the day-for-night problem, but I do remember having a hard time warming to the film the first time I saw it -- the brutality of the murder scenes (specifically the first one) put me off a bit.

I like it fine now, and Savini's work is certainly terrific, but when I compare it to Friday the 13th, the latter has a sweetness and naivete where the former feels crass and cynical.

It was shot that way and looked the same on VHS( I have a copy of the cut R rated Thorn EMI release). Sure they could try some revisionism with current technology and see if they can darken the scenes more. But, it is what it is and actually adds to the low budget charm of it all. Some shots look fine, then others are painfully obvious day for night.

I'm planning to make a camp ground slasher one day, and was thinking of using day for night to film more efficiently. So I've been experimenting with various settings on my camcorder along with the video editing tools on a program I have, and sometimes I get decent results.

I am definitely not a fan. I do like it more than Friday the 13th, but I'd watch Sleepaway Camp over it ANY day. It's just so mean-spirited and blunt. Like, the POV scene at the beginning where the killer gets out of the hospital and immediately very horribly and graphically murders a random prostitute. What does that even have to do with anything else?! It's just out of nowhere, has no connection to anything else in the movie, and is ridiculously nasty. I like watching it for the technical impressiveness of the gore, and for Jason Alexander, but it just makes me feel rotten, and I don't find it interesting on any other filmmaking levels beyond gore effects. If I'm going for a serious slasher movie, I'll go for House on Sorority Row or NOES or Halloween or something. For something that's more fun, I'll take My Bloody Valentine or Terror Train or Slumber Party Massacre or Blood Rage or something. I don't begrudge anyone that likes this movie, but I totally understand why people could dislike it and still enjoy other slashers.

Just watched this (Arrow import). Really good slasher, one of my favorites now. Picture quality surprisingly good for an old master.

We're talking about a genre that's nothing more than people murdering other people in a generally gruesome fashion. It's all mean-spirited to some extent.

And it's connection is that he's an angry psychotic going to seek his revenge.

I too have to say it was a wise choice to get the Arrow Region B locked release as opposed to the stateside Scream Factory disc.

The PQ is indeed pretty good for an old master. I know some prefer the less bright Scream Factory transfer, but I would take better compression (and a Hysteria Lives commentary track) over a darker image.

Yeah, the grain was really great and made the image look much smoother. I am no longer surprised they didn't remaster it, it looks great like this. Super fans should consider an upgrade, though I bet most are fine with the Scream.

I like my Scream Factory Blu-ray of The Burning.

I mainly enjoy the sheer audacity of this movie. The killer in The Burning doesn't waste time or screw around.
[Show spoiler]He just jumps out of a canoe and kills everyone in sight within seconds. "Look, there's an empty canoe. Wait...no...ahhhhhhhhh" Splat!
Hahahahahahaha.

Those of you who own the new Miami Vice set and who are paying attention will recognize actor Ned Eisenberg from his role in the episodes, "Lombard", "Yankee Dollar", "World of Trouble", and "The Lost Madonna" (which also features the lovely Elizabeth Berridge from Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse). Eisenberg's characters in these episodes are all unrelated. I guess that they just liked him as a supporting actor.

The Arrow steelbook already came out.

What's coming out in December is just the standard edition.
