You might already know this, but for those who don't...Tanuki are not raccoons, despite similarities. Translating tanuki as raccoons is like calling an alligator a crocodile or calling a leopard a cheetah. Similar, yes, but also completely different.

I wish they'd either call them tanuki or at least "raccoon dogs" (As in English they are known as Japanese Raccoon Dogs), as again, they aren't raccoons and it's misleading to call them that.

Hey guys. Sorry we didn't get around to watching Only Yesterday until last night. It was very delightful movie. My niece and me both enjoyed it. There was a couple of spots where I had to explain it to her because it bounced around a bunch. My niece really enjoyed the flash back stories a lot. She did say that it lacked action like most of the Ghibli titles.

Well, of course, because it's one of the slice of life Ghibli titles, just like Poppy Hill, Whisper of the heart, Marnie, Ocean Waves, Wind Rises, etc... it's not part of the fantasy genre of Ghibli - those are the ones with the "action," if you can call it that, lol. Even most of those are pretty tame and slow compared to other action anime. Glad you both liked it!

For a couple more hours, the Amazon Exclusive collected works of Hayao Miyazaki are on sale for Prime members at $142.39.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0117V8BX8/

That's 11 films at $12.95 per film, which is cheaper than you're going to get them separately. Jump on it if you don't already have them.

Also, don't forget that the versions of Laputa, Kiki, and Mononoke included in this collection have proper subtitles (as opposed to dubtitles).

I always wonder how younger people react to OY, because the first time I saw it, I was only lukewarm on it. This was when I was 20 years old. When I hit 25 I watched it again and liked it better. When I hit 28 I gave it another watch and this time I REALLY liked it. By the time I hit 30, it became possibly my favorite Ghibli.

The thing is I couldn't really relate to Taeko when I was younger because I still had my whole life ahead of me. Here was this seemingly normal late 20s woman thinking about her childhood...and that's all I saw. And while I was amused, I just didn't really "get" it emotionally. It was only when I knew real failure as an adult, and found that things don't always turn out as planned in life, that I really got to understand what OY was all about.

it would be nice if Studio Ghibli would release a slipcover set that you could only buy online and it could be clear on the back to keep the original stuff visible, but they'd all have uniform spines and could have the cool silhouette covers or something.

Only Yesterday was fine, not my favorite but not my least favorite... just kind of there. It sort of felt aimless but that may have been the point.
I have a full Star Wars: The Force Awakens unused code, willing to trade it for any Marvel/Pixar/Disney movie that I don't have in my UV collection, (Guardians of the Galaxy and prior, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Brave, Alice in Wonderland animated, Dumbo, etc).

Speaking of things that are making a comeback...

http://www.comingsoon.net/games/news...ng-in-november

Returning to Ghibli, I think it's safe to assume that Disney will not release My Neighbors The Yamadas in BD (they haven't even release their whole animated canon in the format and at this point, I doubt they will) so our only hope is GKIDS coming to the rescue, as they always do.

Hirokatsu Kihara was a member of the production staff at Studio Ghibli, working on Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service in the 1980's. More than two decades later, the producer gave an interview to British style magazine Dazed at London's Hyper Japan festival last weekend, and confessed he thinks all the films since Kiki's Delivery Service are boring.

Kihara admitted his bias toward the films he has worked on, but based his criticism of the films in his experience working at Ghibli. "During the three films that I worked on, I was [Hayao] Miyazaki's confidant in terms of ideas and concepts," he said. "I noticed the problem was that Miyazaki likes to put everything of himself and everything that he had into one film. But, when you've done that work, what's left?"

Kihara explained that he believes each film to be the sole work of director Hayao Miyazaki or director Isao Takahata, and so have lacked ideas. He compared this approach to filmmaking at Disney and Pixar, where "they get everyone to throw in ideas." The directors, he said, have too much on their shoulders. "They're overworked – they don't have enough time to come up with new ideas or mature the ones they have."

Kihara also noted the high turnaround of employees at Studio Ghibli. He attributed this to practice of hiring people because they "please the producers," not because of their creative ideas. "They want followers, not leaders – that's why the work is reducing in quality," he said.

When asked for the reason for this workplace culture, he answered, "There's one person there who I won't name. I find it very scary. He speaks like a yakuza and rules it like a politician."

Kihara was a production coordinator on My Neighbor Totoro and production desk on Kiki's Delivery Service. He has been credited as a production staff member in several anime productions since leaving Ghibli, but now focuses on writing ghost stories.

I'm a bit of a crafty person/loser, and have considered making some of my own matching slipcovers, just so they all match. Making the silhouette covers as slips would be awesome, but decent scans seem few and far between. I've seen a few clips on YouTube on folks doing DIY slip covers, seems fairly easy... Maybe one day.

EDIT: I spoke too soon and was able to find a link to decent scans on another thread. Looks like someone has attempted this sort of thing before! http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread....198117&page=10

New project!!!
