You know what that means, its time to start saving but I won't jump on 4K bandwagon next year because the price is probably gonna be higher than the sky.

I will wait a few years myself before i jump but the good thing is prices will fall farther for blu ray disks

4K discs, if they are to exist at all (which I happen to doubt) cannot happen in 2013, except in prototype and/or proprietary form. 4K discs would need industry agreement and this is a notoriously slow process. 2014 at the earliest.

Furthermore, be careful of what you wish for because a new format could sink BD entirely. Consumers could revolt. Most consider BD to be a "new" format, even though it's actually been around for years and if the industry pushes another new format and one that would be incompatible with current BD players, consumers might be pissed by the whole thing and ignore it because they would expect even another new format in a few years.

The hardware manufacturers like this kind of thing because it encourages people to upgrade at a time when hardware isn't selling well. But consumers have largely ignored 3D and if they don't immediately spot a difference in showrooms (which they probably can't, especially considering how bad most showroom TVs look anyway), it won't sell.

It will be an extension of the bluray format. not an entirely different format.

Can you play a 3D blu-ray in a blu-ray player not designed for 3D? And still get the 3D effect? It doesn't matter if it is an "extension" of the same format. If you still have to buy new hardware to utilize it, it may as well be a whole new format. That's the point.

Doubt all you want, 4k discs are coming and have been planned for awhile. I'm more interested in how they market it and what kind of prices they will command compared to standard "2k" Blu-Ray.

Oh yea, before you think this is too much resolution, 8K is coming next! Japan are hoping for 2020 rollout of this on their terrestial tv.

You do have the fact that if it were to utilise Blu-rays as storage medium the 4K Blu players don't necessarily have to be a lot more expensive than normal Blu-rays. Just as 3D players didn't start at new technology prices (like Blu ray did in 2006 with prices nearing the 1000) but only had a small premium over 2D players.

Blu-ray does need to keep ahead of the more convenient alternatives which also claim to be 1080p over time (those alternatives are of course heavily compressed, but it may be hard to explain the difference of that to Blu-ray 1080p to a J6P).

People who care enough about quality will get new equipment. Me included. It has and always will be about profit. That is how the industry operates. Even with the race to the bottom that is Internet streaming, they will try to flog new systems that allow not as bad as the previous bad crap in the future.
