You should probably look up the term 'open matte'. The film wasn't shot with anamorphic lenses.

"Over the Top" was shot with an anamorphic lens, "Kickboxer" was matted to 1.85:1 from its 1.37:1 negative. The Kickboxer BD shows exactly how the film was originally projected in theaters. How do you not grasp this?

Where is the guy's bill from his hat in the dvd picture behind Stallone .. it is just gone. It would have to be there, you can see it by the photos side by side. Camera must be panning and he's behind Stallone. You can see that the angle of the hat behind the kid is different in the photos.

I watched this film countless times on VHS as a kid, not a pre-recorded official VHS release but rather an old TV broadcast taped on a blank VHS. I also have the region 4 DVD but the DVD is down right awful. The dubbing over Eric is disgustingly poor, it trimmed/removed moments of important dialog, and lastly it deleted important character building scenes, like off the top of my head: the lunch scene showing Kurt eagerly responding to Taylor as he arrives to pick him up to go visit Eric in the hospital but Xian Chow tries to teach Kurt self control and makes the link by saying he is training useless, but none more famous then the hospital scene which was damn near insulting. The DVD is a disgrace and the Blu-Ray from what I hear seems to be an emulation of that (crappy unnecessary dubbing, dialog gone and important scenes gone.) I'd rather stick with my TV broadcasted version on a blank VHS because that is what I grew up with and that to me is the full complete version of the film. To hell with the sloppy badly edited DVD and Blu-Ray editions.
Does anyone know why the hell they redubbed Eric's voice anyway!? Last edited by Blu-21; 12-20-2012 at 06:16 AM. |

I remember Van Damme ripping Tong Po's ponytail off at the end ...I didnt see this on the blu-ray ...or youtube for that matter. Was that scene on VHS or I'm thinking of a different movie ?

I picked this movie up Thursday at Wal-Mart for $6.00 and just got finished watching it after having not seen it in YEARS. The last time that I saw it was in the 90's when I was kid and they had it on HBO. This movie was awesome if I loved this than I know that I will really enjoy Bloodsport.

For those who want to see just how good the now OOP original 1999 HBO Region-1 widescreen DVD looked, here's a caps-a-holic link that shows it in comparison to the German limited edition DVD (of which the German Blu is very close) as well as the horrible UK DVD release. Simply put, the 1999 HBO DVD handily outclasses the German DVD (and Blu-ray), as well as the Region-A Lionsgate Blu:
