I got more of the "Star Wars" feeling back with JC than any of the prequels, that's for sure. I felt like a kid again.

Every time I watch even a little bit of this (even now on a standard definition Starz channel, cropped to 1:33:1, with weak stereo sound), it resonates with me more and more, and I am impressed with it more and more (on all levels). Giacchino's score, the effects, the writing, the performances, everything. I truly wish it could have brought in more money... and I wish I could have enjoyed it this much at first. (I also wish that Prince of Persia could have done better, but I think there are even smaller chances of that one getting a sequel). For those who want a John Carter sequel, check out the instructions at the site below, I've happily completed each step. Who knows... we may get that sequel yet.

Hm, I was really hoping that was for the 3D version. Is it worth getting the movie in 3D? I never saw it, but... I don't know. I kind of want the 3D one if I did get it, but it is never on sale at my Best Buy or Amazon when I check

It's a really good action movie with a stunning female lead, I'll say 4/5. I think the lack of proper promotion killed it before it came out, shame it won't get a sequel.

By "stunning female lead," do you mean physically attractive, developed as a very strong character, or both?

Lynn Collins is absolutely gorgeous and an integral part of the story, one could almost argue it's as much her movie as it is John Carter's.

They should have kept the original book title, A Princess of Mars.

It was a post-conversion... I would say go for the 2D unless you have a 3D display and other 3D titles like it (then you would want 3D for consistency).

It's actually more of a "hybrid". The cgi (and there is quite a bit) is (mostly) rendered, while the 2d footage is converted. Parts of it look great, others somewhat flat.

I actually enjoyed this movie; despite the dated & implausible premise, it was kinda fun. It should have gotten more respect, marketing-wise IMO.

I received the 3D combo pack for free through Disney Movie Awards. Haven't watched it yet but glad to see some positive reviews. I should try watching it this week.

I think anyone familiar with the books would agree with that. I remember reading once that Disney or Andrew Stanton wanted a title that was more attractive to modern audiences. I guess they were worried that if you've never heard of it, A Princess of Mars just doesn't sound that appealing.

Stanton originally had the movie titles as JOHN CARTER OF MARS, that held up until something like a month before the first trailer was released. At the time Rich Ross (and possibly MT Carney both) went to Stanton with research data that basically said movies with the word Mars in the title don't do well and we need to change the title. The title gets cut down to just JOHN CARTER and Andrew Stanton goes out in interviews being a "good citizen" (a term he used multiple times when it came to describing working under studio politics) and took responsibility for the title change. (It would be nice to eventually find out who determined to use that plain bold arial style font for the title, in yellow no less -- something about it seems to turn off interest, much less convey that the film was a sci-fi movie. I can't see Stanton doing it, as even me with my miniscule artistic sense can see it was a bad decision).

Had the title been unchanged I'd be willing to bet that the title card we see at the end of the movie with the full JOHN CARTER OF MARS would have been what Stanton used.

After watching the movie, which is great, I bought the e-books. They're also great. I hope they're able to make the rest of the stories into movies. They'd be fantastic.

Last night on Boardwalk Empire, one of the characters was reading a book in the John Carter series..really shows how amazing it is that this movie was based on books from the early 20th century.

Given the negative reviews, I want to say how much I loved this movie.

I found a cheap DVD in a used CD/DVD store and decided to take a chance.

John Carter reminds me of all the B movies I saw on Saturday afternoons. There was no comedy in those films and they took themselves seriously unlike JC which did have a bit of humor [the monster dog, the slap on the back of JC's head by the Thark when they went to the wrong city].

Indiana Jones paid tribute to those types of movies too and while JC is no Indiana Jones [1st 2 films] it still was a lot of fun.

Will buy the bluray when I find it cheap.

Though I missed John Carter in the theatre, I did see it twice on DVD; and, I'll buy the Blu if I can get it for a good price.

What an incredible film, which truly exceeded my expectations - amazing effects, incredible scenery, & good story. The film makers were very true to the original ERB story, while at the same time changing some things to make things more "cinematic":

The green four-armed Tharks and the red-skinned/blue-blooded (but otherwise human-looking) people were close to what ERB described in the original books, and the vehicles/other tech was similar to the books as well. Also liked the elaborate costumes, amazing city-scapes, deserts, etc.

I liked the fact that they carried over JC being able to leap very high in the film from the ERB books. If JC hadn't had this extra advantage while on Mars (due to the change in gravity?!), then I don't see how he would have been able to defeat his much more powerful enemies. I.e., if he had just been a regular non-super powered guy wandering around Mars, IMHO he would've been taken out by the Martians very early on...

As far as the main actor who played JC, I didn't have any problems with him - that being said, I felt the film was primarily about the effects, make-up, & creatures more than the actors/acting.

The CGI was amazing, and you could really see texture in the skin of the Tharks, the fur of the white apes, etc.

Though the whole film was excellent, two of the scenes that really stood out for me were the one where John Carter stayed behind to fight off all the evil Tharks alone (that were led by the bald Thern), as well as the arena scene, where JC fought against the large, four-armed white apes - Incredible!

I liked how they changed the explanation as to how JC was transported to Mars to make it more pseudo-scientific/magical, i.e., the medallion was what transported his "consciousness" to Mars; in the original ERB novel, I don't think much of an explanation was given here.

As to why JC didn't do better at the box office despite being such an incredibly visually stunning & amazing movie, as has already been mentioned:

Obviously, the title. After seeing the film, I really can't believe it was called "John Carter" instead of "John Carter of Mars" or, even better, "John Carter, Warlord of Mars"...I am extremely surprised that Disney didn't put "Mars" in the title of the film. Granted, even though the word "Mars" may have not worked for other films, there is no possible way that the general public would know what JC was about without this.

In any case, adding "Mars" to the title would certainly not caused the film to do any worse at the box office than it already did. And, it was interesting that at the very end of the film (before the credits), they did show the title "John Carter of Mars"...As it stood, when an average joe off the street hears the name "John Carter", they would probably think of Noah Wyle's character in ER....You would have thought Disney would have been able to do a better job with the marketing here, given the $ at their disposal...

Also, IMHO three other reasons the film didn't do well:

Timing: The film was released in March, and though that would initially seem like a great time for release since it didn't have to compete against the blockbusters that were coming out in May - July, I'm not sure it was the right move. If the film had instead been released in August (while people were still in the mode of seeing summer films) it may have done better. Then again, maybe not...

I enjoyed the world that was created; very bizzare & definitely sci-fi, but with an archaic, old-fashioned vibe/tone. IMHO the film was an extremely faithful representation of the world that was described in the novels, and that may have been the problem & may explain why people couldn't relate to the film..In the early 21st century, it's tough to relate to a story that was written 100 years ago.

Lack of a toyline: Sure, I completely understand that toy companies probably didn't want to invest in the film since they were uncertain of how well it would do, but IMHO a small, limited series of 4-5 figures and 2-3 creatures @ stores like Target, Wal-mart, etc. a couple of months prior to the film's release may have gone a long way towards making kids both aware of the film & wanting to see the movie. Of course, this may not have made much difference in this case, but it probably couldn't have hurt either...

In any case, it's unfortunate that the film didn't do better at the box office, which means there won't be any sequels...
