He also doesn't see the teal in Aliens. I question his judgment.

Wasn't the remaster purely for streaming services and not for Blu Ray? As is the direction we're heading...

Well, I'm getting this, since I have yet to buy the series, which is funny since I've seen it 6 times. 3 times on AMC, 3 times on Netflix. Currently watching it on Sundance for #7. The 4K set will be my 8th time.

Yes it was done for Netflix only.

They look the same. I don't see any difference in details other than a brightness level.

That's on you, buddy. The compression on those 4K caps is a hideous mess but you can pretty clearly see that it's the far better source (I'm viewing both at 1080p). For example, in the 5th cap, there's a ton of obvious extra detail and less scanner noise in the RV, and the shot with Walt in the car also shows grain (well, the compression mush left of it) behaving much more like grain than a busted telecine tube. I realize I'm wasting my breath here of course.

Very happy with the Blu sets that I have. Not buying this again because of 4K. If 4K takes off and stays around then I may consider it but I'm already sick of 4K being forced out there. Let Blu-Ray breath a little.

While the 4K looks nice, i'm more than happy enough with my copy of the 2nd run barrel set.

I didn't say you were wrong. I said I just don't see any difference.

Most of the tests I've seen claiming up to 50% efficiency increase have been done at extremely low bitrates, often with low-quality, low-complexity, or already compressed sources. Basically H265 excels at delivering garbage-quality streams with lower bandwidth costs.

But that is of no interest here, and I've seen several mentions that for high-quality compression of detailed, grainy content without filtering H265 is not all that much better than H264.

And UHD has four times the resolution, plus 10-bit color, but putting a two-hour movie on a 66GB DL disc and subtracting for the audio, some extras, and some headroom since they rarely fill discs completely, you're only left with maybe twice the bitrate of a good BD.

I hope I'm wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot of poorly compressed titles in the beginning, just like we did with Blu-ray.

If you honestly can't see a difference, you need to check your monitor or your eyes. Everybody else can see the glaring difference between the two.
