So there basically barebones discs for extra space which in turn gives more bitrate, I think I'm starting to catch on but isn't that in turn going backwards.

They go barebones, but b/c bitrate is capped at a certain max, the movie file doesn't use up anywhere close to the capacity of a BD-50 disc.

4K is double the resolution of 1080. It is 2160. 4KTVs and Projectors exist now as well but I don't think they would be necessary for home but I haven't seen 4K Resolution so I can't really comment on that.

I am not sure if they are going to develop an all new format to display true 4K Resolution but if they use Blu-Ray Discs that hold a higher capacity then Blu-Ray could probably support it with no issues at all. I remember reading in February of 2008 that they have developed Blu-Ray Discs that can hold 200GB so it does seem likely. 4K Resolution would probably require new version of HDMI that can support the resolution as well.

I wonder how much of a difference there is though since the new 4K Mastered Discs use a higher bitrate than usual Blu-Ray releases? Maybe the difference won't be major for most of them. I mean most Superbit DVD releases weren't major improvements over the regular editions, some of them featured almost identical quality. My Superbit DVDs of Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were pretty big improvements over the regular editions but then my 2012 Blu-Ray Editions are very nice improvements over the Superbits.

Thats bull. With 10GB - 20GB of disc space left on the 4K Mastered Blu-Ray Discs they should port over all or most of the extras from the previous releases of the films or they should include a second disc with the extras. I remember there were a few Superbits DVD releases called Superbit Deulxe and they featured a second disc with special features.

bluray.highdefdigest.com published a review today for the new 4K Mastered Spider-Man Blu-Ray. They said that the video presentation is stronger but it isn't a night and day improvement and its not a significant upgrade. The audio is a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD Mix whereas the 2012 Release featured a DTS-HD MA 5.1 Mix. They should have just reused the latter. It doesn't matter I guess since both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA offer identical sound quality.

They have several good screenshot comparisons of the 2013 Transfer to the 2007/2012 Transfer but I still think that both look almost identical. I am going to stick with my 2012 Blu-Ray of Spider-Man. The HD Transfer is still very nice and almost all the extras from the DVD are there.

Of course, none of us knows for sure, but increases (even minute ones) in quality are what keep the industry afloat. Just like the switch from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray - they always required new machines and new discs, which forces folks to buy new TV's and new players. This keeps the system humming. I can't see that changing or them giving anything away - even if it's technically feasible. Like a junkie, the system requires new "input" to keep going.

Did you perhaps misread BRGF (or did I)? I thought he/she was just pointing out a difference between the 2 releases, not saying that it was okay that they didn't have the extras. I thought that he/she even pointed out that there was no quality advantage in Sony doing so.

It's alright, he was agreeing with me actually.

I'm sure I'm late to the party, but I just saw my first ad for a 4K upscaling receiver - the Denon AVR-3313CI. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the disc as it claims to upscale "all video signals to 4K (3,840 by 2,160 pixels), which provides four times the picture quality of 1080p ... (and) enables you to use it with 4K monitors and video projectors." I'm pretty sure the 4X quality claim is bogus but has anyone heard anything about this sort of tech?

Receivers have been upscaling signals to 4K for a few years now, but the results are lackluster at best. However, they might look slightly better on a 4K display.
