Reboot, Remake, repeat.

Another day, another remake. Disney is readying another launch of the sci-fi adventure movie Flight of the Navigator. The original film came out in 1986 and starred Joey Cramer as a boy who takes command over an alien spaceship and goes joyriding around the world. Disney has hired Wild Hogs screenwriter Brad Copeland to write the new script, but they haven't chosen a director yet. John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, will return in the same role this time as well. If this turns out anything like the Race to Witch Mountain remake (which was a classic Disney sci-fi from 1975 modernized), then I will be quite upset.

Flight of the Navigator was made fairly inexpensively and only grossed $18 million in its theatrical run, becoming a bigger hit on VHS. I'm expecting Disney to pump some money into this, as it probably needs to be big and flashy this time to capture the interest of today's young audiences. I'm a bit upset by this news because Flight of the Navigator was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. I saw it again earlier this year at the New Beverly and it was just as great as I remember, even though it could use a remake. Unfortunately, I fear this will end up as bad as either of the Race to Witch Mountain or Day the Earth Stood Still remakes.

holy crap i loved that movie

but, come on another remake?
i'd rather them not risk making a crap movie and leave the original alone

but if it turns out to be really good, i'll be seeing it for sure

I too loved this movie as a kid. Don't know if they could do the original justice but I guess we'lll see.

I would love to see Disney release the original "Flight of the Navigator" with the remake when this hits Blu. Like what Fox did with "The Day the Earth Stood Still" both the remake and original in one release.

The original movie didn't HAVE much of a plot, except as a Disney excuse to exploit then-emerging undiscovered comic Paul Reubens as the computer...

The "time warp" first half of the movie was more involving, but it's easy to see a more CGI-driven "X-treem!" version of the second half than the very 80's original.
Notice I didn't say "better", just "easier".

Oh wow! I never thought Hollywood was this stupid. A movie that may be a little difficult to remake because it's a classic. A movie like this is ridiculous to remake. Where is this world coming to?

At the current rate of remakes it will be any day they will remake The Godfather, and Bullitt............

I am hoping for this as well. I will give the remake a chance, but the original is going to be VERY hard to top. I already believe that the soundtrack to the original will be impossible to beat.

Wonder if they can get Sarah Jessica Parker to cameo in it. Plus it would be great if they can get Paul Reubens (Paul Mall) to voice Max again.

Actually Bullitt is still in the works. Brad Pitt was rumored for it a few years ago.

So i was thinking Hey I wonder what that kid is up to these days so i hit up IMDB.com

and it looks like he never really worked after that movie and I also found out he's from Vancouver!

and within his IMDB page there's a topic about "where is he now"

He lives up in Sechelt and worked @ a sporting goods store

I have the German bluray of Flight of the Navigator and the video/audio quality is a very impressive upgrade when compared to the dvd.

To be a fair a remake of a movie done in 1975 is just fine IMO. It is when you have movies being remade that are not only decent but not very old like Spiderman or the countless Superman movies.

I have no doubt that a batman reboot will happen before 2015.

Just to clarify, I wasn't calling FOTN rubbish.

"Navigator" was made in '86, not '75.

I'm not sure whether I am happy about this news or not.

It is one of my all time favourite films, used to watch this loads as a kid. The music was great and I loved the opening sequence and the voice of Max. It all gelled so well together. The actors were just right.

Love 80s films like this, ok the budged wasn't like what it is on movies today but it didn't matter and still doesn't..

I'll probably see it no matter what, but I'm not sure how it could ever be better then the original
