Its the same whine you hear when you go in reverse in a car. Most race cars use straight cut gears (like reverse) pretty sure there also called dog cogs or dog gears. There stronger because the gear is cut straight not diagonally. There less prone to breaking, they make that whine going forward all the time. A friend of mine has the gears on his built turbo cars, sounds funny to me but a waste of money unless your pushing 500+whp.

Any new seasonal events yet? Giving up on video games for a lil while and starting this.

But I don't want to hear the gears 'whining', I want to hear the brutal and vicious engine noises (on applicable cars obviously!). I remember watching the Zonda R on Top Gear and the noise it made was ridiculous (in a good way ). The sound the one in GT5 makes is very disappointing. When I hear a V8 in real life it always puts a smile on my face, I want this game to do the same.

That is a good video. There is a throaty rumble to the real one that doesn't seem to make the GT5 version. Some cars do sound a lot better than others. Example: the Prius.

After watching the vid I'm going to have to try that Vette later because I don't remember it sounding like that. The Cobra sounds ok on tick-over and low revs, but once you start upping the revs the sound is less than satisfactory.

Would I be correct in thinking that for best sounds you have to use completely untuned cars? In my experience changing the exhaust basically makes them all sound the same (roughly ).

Any mods to the exhaust in GT5 will result in a change in the engine sound signature, often in a negative way. I have a Nissan that sounds like poop.

The sound it makes is some kind of irritating backfire that has a horrible pitch. When I first heard it I thought there was a game issue.

Tried the Vette last night and it didn't sound too bad but I had to have my system loud to appreciate it (neighbours were probably less appreciative ). Maybe in GT6 the sounds will make me happy

Went out for only a few minutes today and saw some cool cars. I think this area is a Ford area, lol. 4 Mustangs during a 20 minute trip. Not just run of the mill ones either, 2 were the new convertible model, one was a SVT Cobra, which sounded really mean. One of the convertible Stangs was red with a black top, really sweet looking. I haven't seen any of the new Camaros much less any of the new convertibles. Spotted a Jag XJR and right before I got home, an RX-8.

Mustangs are like ants in that manner. They are everywhere. Its one of the reasons I dont like them. I do respect Cobras though. Those things can be retarded fast with little work.

They are moving half their employees across Japan. As for Mustangs, I like them, especially the new 302 Boss. They want $40K for the GT Premium and 12k more for the 302, hardly a Civic.

But for $40k, I would rather have the 392 Challenger then the GT Premium Mustang.

Vettes are just as bad, at least out here in California.

And it's almost always old buzzards driving them.

haha slick what i mean is everyone has em. Idc about price there still garbage cars lol. The new mustangs are still solid axle, ford needs to get with the times. For that money id rather buy a saleen since there individual rear suspension. Watch the top gear episode where the saleen goes faster around the track with less hp then a gt500. If your buying it to just go straight then yea buy wtv

Not talking the Shelby or GT, I am talking the 302 which they changed the handling significantly. Its pretty well known the GT and Shelby are straight line cars but the Boss is a track car. It has Parnelli Jones approval.

I thought this mite intrest a few people in this thread.

In my anticapaton of Qually tomorrow for the German GP I was reading through some of the press confrence transcripts, and was surprised to read that there are talks to incorperate fully closed cockpits! Now nothings confirmed at this point, its just being disgused but considering the cars will most likely go through a great re design come 2014 due to the engine changes, they may just incorporate this. Heres the full statement.

Quote:
Q: (Ottavio Daviddi - Tuttosport) There is an FIA idea to close cars for safety reasons; I would like to know your opinion on this. I think all the aerodynamics would change if this was the case.

James Allison (Renault): This is something that’s been under discussion for a few Technical Working Group meetings now. We’re looking to try to look after the driver’s head, both from large scale things like tyres and also small scale things like the very unfortunate incident that Felipe suffered. There are a few suggestions around: one of them was looking into a fully enclosed canopy. Another one was looking into a visor-type where it’s still open above the driver’s head but he has a visor in front of him. And then there is a third type of proposal as well, where there isn’t a see-through windscreen at all but there is like a roll (bar) structure in front of the driver that would anyway deflect any big objects. All those things are still in fairly early discussion and you would have seen from what the FIA proposed, published recently, that they are showing some of the very early research that’s being done into the feasibility and practicality of this type of solution, but there are a lot of questions to answer before we can bring it to a practical solution. The closed canopy would have an aerodynamic effect - not a bad one, it would be easier to manage the airflow around a closed canopy than an open one - but there are all sorts of other things to discuss, like egress in the event of an accident, keeping the canopy clean, for example when it might get covered in oil and the like, so each of the proposed solutions has advantages and disadvantages and we need to do the basic research to find out what is the best way forward.
Norbert Haug (Mercedes): I think that if this makes sense for Formula One it needs to be applied to all formula: the junior drivers, everybody and I think we should carefully think that idea through.
I actually would like to see a fully closed cockpit, I think the drivers safety should be the most important asspect to the sport. And it reminds me of this little concept beauty

Maybe Adrian Newey was closer to reality than he realised
