I have a question for you Anime collectors: Is buying upconverted Anime on Blu Ray worth it? I want to get "Samurai Champloo" (i hear it's good) but the reviews say it's an upconversion. Should i just get the DVD?

I own all versions, but got rid of Funi's BD...stick with the Geneon release, it's a no brainer that the quality of the Geneon dvd's upscaled on a BD player is better as is the audio... That's also the consensus from the anime boards I frequent....

The first version is rediculous, the re-release was a tick better but sadly the dvd's look and sound better.... One should make their own decision though, rent or do Netflix of the BD's and if that's sufficient then go for it...otherwise, if your disappointed, you have other options.

I just have a gut feeling on this one. To my knowledge the only anime movies that funi have released in a dvd case are the eden movies. Trigun badlands rumble and evangelion 2.22 both were released in blu ray cases at a time when funi were going heavily through their dvd case trend. Granted those titles were not combo packs but a live action title released by them around the same time last year The Sword With No Name was released in a blu ray case with blu ray slip and it was a blu ray dvd combo pack which bucked their trend of going with dvd cases for their live action combo pack movies (although Tojamaru which was released the same day came out as a dvd case wit no slip). To me it seems like the more popular a release is the more likely they are to use a blu only case and slip. FMA as a theatrical movie and a very popular series would probably sell very well if it was stuck in the regular movie section in a store. Hence they would not feel the need to get it put in the anime section. Oh well anyway it's all just speculation on my part.

I don't mind a DVD size slipcover if it has BD case inside. Black Butler was the first one of those I got and I just put away the slipcover and put the case on the shelf. The slipcover is basically just a bigger version of what's on the case anyway.

We need to let Funimation know that what they're doing is not cool!

I wouldn't mind it so much if there was just CONSISTENCY with their releases! Some have DVD slipcovers with BR cases inside while others have DVD cases... Use one format and stick with it, dammit!

I would let Funimation know, but i'm not allowed on their site since i'm not a US citizen.

Funimations last strategy included the DVD slipcovers & cases. Funimation new strategy is the DVD sized slipcovers with Blu-ray cases and Blu-ray toppers. Funimation thinks this will make DVD & Blu-ray buyers happy and Funimation can still have all their releases placed in the DVD Anime section in stores.

By the way we already did. Every time one of their surveys comes around we always tell them no dvd cases for blu releases. Thats how we got to where we are now. Quite honestly I'm happy with the way their doing their releases now.

Exactly, this is how we got to where we are now. I can also live with this as long as Funimation keeps to this new strategy...
