Jorma Taccone Directing the MacGruber Movie with Ryan Phillippe

Screw the actual MacGuyver movie, this is all we need! Jorma Taccone, who most recently played Chaka in the putrid Land of the Lost movie, is set to make his directorial debut with the MacGruber movie based on the popular SNL skit starring Will Forte. In addition to Forte, who will reprise his role as the titular character, Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are also in negotiations to join the cast. Kristen Wiig will reprise her role as his assistant. Taccone hasn't directed any features, but he did create the character and direct most of the MacGruber skits for SNL. Forte, Taccone, and John Solomon are writing the feature script.

The MacGruber sketches saw Forte as MacGyver's son, who always found himself, along with that week's guest star, in a room with a ticking bomb. MacGruber gets sidelined by personal issues, and the bomb goes off. The story for the film will be a bit different than what we've seen on SNL previously. The legendary, much decorated MacGruber is pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador by a colonel, who needs him once more to fight on behalf of his country. This time the mission involves going up against the evil Cun*h (Val Kilmer), who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cun*h killed MacGruber's bride.

I don't watch SNL anymore, so I'm not too familiar with MacGruber, but it sounds like it could be fun. The last SNL-ish movies we were Hot Rod and Baby Mama, but neither of those did well or were that great. I expect this MacGruber movie to get a lot of buzz, but as for if it'll actually be any good, it's too early to tell.

It's not a Tina Fey script and doesn't star Amy Poehler, so it can't be those...

As a huge MacGyver fan, this is the worst idea to come out of SNL since It's Pat.

I love the MacGruber skits but I'm not sure about a whole movie based on them. Jorma Taccone is hilarious (see Hot Rod and the J*** in my Pants SNL Digital Short) but he has no directing experience. Still, I wouldn't have high expectations for this movie and would prefer Taccone do something with Andy Samberg instead.

I can't make it through 5 minutes of SNL much less 2 hours of one character. And messing with Mac!

I still have Swiss Army knife in my pocket to this day. It might not have saved my life on occasion-- but close.

Lots of movies have been made out of SNL sketches (e.g., Wayne's World). It's not new.

What is "the suck"? I need to know how to prepare for it.

I'm a huge MacGyver fan too, but I love the MacGruber skits. They even got Richard Dean Anderson to reprise MacGyver for a few of them.

I don't know how well an entire movie of it will be, but I'll probably check it out.

The problem with SNL is easy. The show has not been funny in almost 15 years. They need to releazie why Skits work as skits and not as movies. Hence why Its Pat, Anything Will Ferrell, The Coneheads, don't work as movies. What is next, Celebrity Jeopardy with Will Ferrell and Sean Connery?

Don't forget Superstar, Night at the Roxury's and The Ladies Man. I loved The Ladies man and Roxbuy skits but not the movie..

Think the only one I liked was Waynes World

There's been a couple decent SNL movies. I really enjoyed both Wayne's World movies, as well as The Blues Brothers. In addition The Waterboy is obviously based on Canteen Boy, Office Space is based on SNL Shorts, and A Mighty Wind featured characters first seen on SNL. I also liked Night at the Roxbury and Superstar, but those clearly weren't great movies.

SNL also has 2 of the worst movies I've ever seen, It's Pat and Stuart Saves His Family. Crazy to think the star of Stuart Saves His Family is now a US Senator.

I think SNL has gotten much better over the last couple years and has some sharp writing, including Taccone. I really like the current cast, particuarly Andy Samberg, Will Forte, Jason Sudekis, and Bill Hader. The women have also improved, as Kristin Wiig is hilarious but overused, and Abby Elliott seems to have potential. They really need to get someone who can play Obama though.

Good to see that SNL is still taking lame characters from its sketches, and trying to expand them into 90min films..can we nominate this for a Razzie now?
