is there a problem with the Yammy BDP doing the upconverting? My little Panny does as good of a job upconverting as my sony upconverting dvd player, so I moved the DVD player to the kids room for their Vizio.
But I understand, I use the BDP for play CDs, and now i want a dedicated CD player, Just because.....

I bought that Marantz 8001 just because i didn't want to use my Yamaha Player and of course wanted something better. My Yamaha is awesome for Blu-movies. But all Ive been hearing is how amazing Oppo does for up-scaling DVD's. Now my Yamaha does a great Job iam Just looking for the Best up-scaling player out there with a reasonable price.

I used to use Oppo 983, but after comparing it to Pioneer BDP-09, I sold it. Not that the BDP-09 scaling is better, it's about the same (which is extremely good), but since the BDP-09 BD and CD playback is the same or better than my other gears, at least I can get rid of 3 gears and consolidate them into one piece of equipment.
Another unit I'm going to try out is Oppo BDP-83 (which upscaling supposedly equal to the 983 and CD playback -- as a transport -- is also supposedly superb).

Oppo 980 has 7.1 analog output. Oppo 981 has 5.1 analog output. Oppo 980 has 480i/576i Output over HDMI (for use with external video processors): 480i NTSC / 576i PAL Oppo 981 doesn't offer this option. Oppo 980 has component video output. Oppo 981 has no component. Oppo 980 has USB 2.0 input. Oppo 981 does not. In my opinion, the biggest advantage of 980 over 981 and 983 is its ability to output SACD in its native DSD format. Both 981 and 983 convert the DSD to multi-channel PCM. That is very surprising, considering that they are more expensive than 980. See comparison by Oppo: http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_comp.asp

After three blu-ray players i can say there is a very noticeable visual difference between all of them in this department, and i too am looking for the best atm since i have a massive dvd collection, and after spending all the cash i have on them and my equipment i don't think its too much to drop a few more dollars to make my dvd's less painful to watch and closer to the level where people gotta ask if i put in a dvd or bludisc.

Hi Ozzman,
I just picked up the Oppo DV-980H from solutionsav here in Toronto. They are an authorized Canadian reseller of Oppo products and they had a real good turnaound time. Placed my order on a Sunday night and received it on Tuesday. The Oppo 980 is $195 CDN + Tax + Shipping (but you can arrange for pick-up). I haven't yet experimented with the upscaling DVD ability of this unit, as I primarily bought this as a CD/SACD player. It took me a while to perfect the settings on this unit for CD/SACD playback, but I think most of that stemmed from some handshake issues between it and my Yamaha HTR-6190B. Some of those issues are still there, but dobyblue suggested that I look into checking on a firmware and DSP upgrade from Yamaha. I will do that tomorrow. (There were none when I checked on this several months ago). John

The scaling on the 980 and 981 should be identical. I have had a 981 for a few years and have been very happy with it. I just upgraded to an Oppo BD-83 (which uses a different chipset than the 980 and 981) and it does perform marginally better at upscaling, so my 981 is out of my system. But there is nothing wrong with the performance of either the 980 or the 981!

I have absolutely no handshake issues with my Denon receiver. Recently, I bought the Oppo BDP-83 player, but I continue to use the 980 for CD, and DVD playback. I don't want to wear out the new BD player. My PS3 was moved to the living room.

I reviewed the Yamaha BD player when it was newly released. Although it's not a bad player, it's not a great plauer either. Pending my Oppo BDP-83 tests, from variois reviews I've read, the Oppp blows any sub-$2000 players in both BD and upscaling DVD players

In terms of quality on CD/SACD playback, I recommend the Oppo for sure. The sound is amazing and my PS3 doesn't compare. Despite my initial frustration (self-induced I might add), I would buy the Oppo again without hesitation. I have the Oppo DV-980H, NOT the 981. John

my sony receiver says that it doesn't play sa-cd via HDMI, so the analog 7.1 would be the way that I would need to set it up correct? I am assuming this is due to the fact that my sony doesnt process DSD audio(?).... If I set it up as a DVD player and had it output audio via PCM instead of DSD(?), would it be possible to play the sa-cd audio through my receiver???? Or should I just shop for component cables that can process 1080p video in case I want to play DVDs?
