There was supposed to be three "Books" to the story, each book taking two seasons.

So the two seasons that were finished completed the 1st Book, thus a lot of things were wrapped up, but there were hints and clues as to where they were headed.

I would kill for these to be on Blu

BTW: here's something for the Carnies out there.

Here is the Season 1 Pitch Document for Carnivale, outlying the history and backstory of the show and it's characters.

Quote:
During the course of the auction last month, Dan Knauf sent me a
document that he said I could share with all of you -- an
original "Pitch Document" or Summary for Carnivale's first season.
This one was written AFTER the Pilot Summary we sold in the auction,
and therefore includes some of the changes made AFTER the pilot was
re-written and includes first season episode summaries, as well.

Indeed they were, hence their send off.
Because Calamari Marionette Ph.D sounded pompous, that's why.

Yep, those shows got axed because of budgetary considerations. Large ensemble casts plus huge sets equal large dollars. Only very high ratings could have kept those shows on the air.

Yes, true - another theory, pure speculation:
[Show spoiler] Ben was slashed in the gut, and passed out in the cornfield. He was carried back to the trucks. As they drove off, he woke up and healed himself, thus killing the cornfield.
. Anyone read the books? I'd like to know where they intended to go with it.

I think that
[Show spoiler] the corn died in a way that kind of started in the center of the field (where Justin was killed) and slowly spread outword, so I think the first theory is more accurate. Sophie somehow revived to Justin using the corn...
That is unless I misremembered, which is entirely possible since it has been awhile since I've seen the show.

according to the showrunners here's some immediate answers as to what happened in the finale, and what would have happened:

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Following the cancellation, the writers did not immediately answer fan questions about the characters' future, arguing the story ideas should not be revealed just for instant fan gratification and should wait to be told until the opportunity arises. They later provided clues in DVD special features and at conventions, in forums and in online chats. Daniel Knauf said Jonesy would have recovered from his gunshot wound, but did not address the circumstances of his survival. Producer Howard Klein however pointed out that Jonesy "wasn't shot in a specific place – he [just] collapsed",and Knauf added "Sofie's intent in shooting Jonesy was to stop him from taking her back to the carnival", not to kill him. Season 3 would have opened with Jonesy pitching in a Major League Baseball game and still being married to Libby.

Writer and co-executive producer William Schmidt described Sofie's last seen action as "raising her father at the end, bringing him back to life." This was "to indicate that she was truly evil", although "she is the Omega so there's good in her too." The third season "would have been pretty much centered on Sofie and the internal struggle of her good versus evil." The nature of the Omega would have taken two seasons to unfold.

Both Ben and Brother Justin would have been alive in the third season. Daniel Knauf would have written Brother Justin as a man "with an inoperable chunk of shrapnel near his heart", which the anointed blade had caused in the final season 2 episode. Brother Justin would have been "severely weakened and prone to exhaustion, serving as a hollow figurehead in his burgeoning ministry. Sofie and Iris would be vying for the power behind the throne, with Sofie by far the more dangerous of the two, although Iris is a force to be reckoned with."

Knauf had the intention of marrying Brother Justin to Sofie at some point in the future, and the third season would have shown a three-year old boy amidst Sofie and the Crowes. Knauf left the question about the child's parents open. Ben's future would face other hardships. According to Knauf, Ben's wounds of the season 2 finale would require repeated suturing, causing him to lose his Vitae Divina and draining him of strength. Ben would be a different man than he was before, with a personality closer to Management, and while he and Sofie would be bound together by love, their ultimate fates remain uncertain.

This is by far my favorite show of all time.
Pure art - genius!

I'm desperately waiting for a Blu-Ray release.

By the way, the should have had 6 seasons, the 2 seasons we got only seem to have sort of closure cause it was the ending of the first of three chapters.

The next chapter would have jumped 4 years in the shows timeline and the last one again:
Season 1+2 = 1934-1935
Season 3+4 = 1939-1940
Season 5+6 = 1944-1945

Here I collected some trailers, additional informations and interviews:

Sad to see an alumnus of Carnivale passed away recently.

Quote:
Shadix was born in Bessemer, Alabama in 1952. In a biography posted on his website, he says the very same week he was born his parents bought their first TV set. “From my earliest memory,” he wrote, “I decided I was somehow going to get inside that box and make my family laugh like they laughed at Lucy and cry like they did with Playhouse 90 dramas." Seeing a double bill of A Street Car Named Desire and Suddenly Last Summer at age 9 only intensified his desire to act. He started participating in church pageants, school plays and community theatre.

At age 17, when Shadix came out to his conservative Baptist family, his father subsequently enrolled him in an aversion therapy program that involved electroshock in order to “cure” him of his homosexuality. After the first day of the program, Shadix attempted suicide by overdosing on amphetamines and was in a coma for three days. When he was released from the hospital, Shadix’s father told him that he wanted him to live and to be whoever he wanted to be. It was a turning point in Shadix’s life.

Shadix moved to New York, where he immersed himself in the theatre world and became friends with Tennessee Williams, then in the twilight of his career. On the advice of an actor friend, Shadix relocated to Los Angeles, where he became involved with The Groundlings Improv Group. He also started working in film, landing a bit part in the movie The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), starring Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson. (Shadix had all of one line in the film.)

His big break came after ten years in Los Angeles, when Tim Burton attended a theatre production of “Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights” on the advice of screenwriter Michael McDowell. Shadix was playing Gertrude Stein (against the wishes of his agent, who thought the part too risky). Impressed, Burton cast Shadix as Otho, an interior decorator and expert on the paranormal, for his upcoming film Beetlejuice (1989).
The role led to further work in high profile projects like Heathers (1989), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Multiplicity (1996) and Planet of the Apes (2001). He also had a role in HBO’s short-lived series Carnivale and made numerous TV appearances.

After spending 30 years in LA, he took a self-imposed hiatus from film work and moved back to his birthplace of Bessemer, Alabama in 2007, where he spent time remodeling a Queen Anne Victorian house he’d bought there. When his home was destroyed in a fire, he moved to Birmingham. He continued to be active in the theatre scene, pursued his love of photography and contributed to various gay rights causes. He suffered mobility problems as his health declined, and it is believed his death yesterday was the result of blunt force trauma caused when he fell from his wheelchair.

HBO has been going to the well with older releases lately, we can only hope The Wire and Carnivale are next up now that Deadwood comes out in 2 weeks.

Watched the first season of this a few weeks ago for the first time since it originally aired. I only remembered about 5% of it, was great to relive it. Once I finish up season 2 of Twin Peaks I'm going to go back and watch season 2 of Carnivale as well before jumping over to The X-Files, which I only ever saw sporadically during it's run and don't think I ever even saw an entire season.
