Default Black Mask & Black Mask 2: City of Masks Discussion

Anyone else seen the Black Mask films? I have the first on Blu-Ray and the second on DVD. Here's a bit of trivia for you guys; in Black Mask 2, DR. Lang is played by Scott Adkins who plays Weapon XI/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Karen Mok played Tracey, whom he kidnapped, but really saved since the 701 Squad tried to kill her. And Francais Yip from AVP:R and Rumble in the Bronx was Kaylin, the one who kept beating Jet Li's a**.

I'd like Black Mask more if they gave it a proper release stateside. They've treated this movie like crap for...forever.

Oh ok thanks. I didnt know she was in AVP R, but the movie looked kinda silly when it was on and the reason i watched a bit of it was because of the 2 girls. Is the film any good though?? I can stare at beautiful asian chicks allday by the way. lol

Well, the first film was released theatrically in the US by Lionsgate back when it was Artisan Entertainment. It got killed in the box office because it opened the same weekend as Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Then Black Mask 2: City of Masks was released straight to DVD here in the US by SONY. Given how poor it is with it's heavy CGI, it deserved a straight to DVD release I say. I don't know if Lionsgate passed on Black Mask 2 or not but since it's SONY's property, I doubt we'll have Blu-Ray release here in the US anytime soon. I am honestly surprised that Lionsgate released Black Mask on Blu-Ray last year.

The first film was good, the US release is edited down by like 15 minutes or so and they replaced the music with a rap soundtrack. I think it's all right, not that bad really.

This is big difference between the first film and the second; the first film was made in Cantonese and then they made the sequel in English.

Also, the second film has an odd group of actors in it. Tobin Bell (Saw), Traci Lords (Zack & Miri Make a Porno), Tyler Mane (Rob Zombie's Halloween), and Michael Bailey Smith (The Hills Have Eyes Remake).

And also, the synopsis on the back cover of Black Mask 2 makes it seem like it does take place after the first film but it has nothing to do with the Jet Li film at all.

Also; our Black Masks:

Jet Li:

Andy On:

I liked how the mask looked in the first film. The mask in the second film looks like junk.

Karen Mok was also great in Fallen Angels. Françoise Yip is always pleasant to watch/ look at

Ya, the first Black Mask movie is the only real one worth mentioning. The other one's were pretty much garbage.

Now that you mention it, there's another film, but I do not know if it's connected and I can not find a copy anywhere of it but it's called Black Mask Vs Gambling Mastermind.

I honestly have no clue if it's related to the series at all since I've never seen it. There's no IMDB page for it and it was supposedly released in the US by Tai Seng but I haven't seen a single copy of it anywhere.

There was also a third film, I belive, made stateside, but it's probably something that doesn't even deserve mention.

Nevermind, maybe I am thinking of the gambling mastermind. I remember looking through some release dates list a long time ago and seeing another Black mask movie and thinking of how ridiculous that was. It wasn't the second one...so I'm assuming it's the Chinese one. I think one of it's other titles was Shadow Mask or Legend of the Black Mask or something...I think it's the same movie though.

HKFlix won't sell it because Tai Seng owns the rights, but I've never seen a release of it here in the US, so I'm S.O.L. on getting a copy.

Didn't the second one have the wrestler Rob Van Dam in it? As a matter of fact, I think the storyline in that movie involved superhuman wrestlers as part of some craptastic scheme. I saw it once many years ago but have mercifully forgotten almost all of it.

Yeap, that's City of Masks. They were genetically altered to be animal-hybrids.
