Importing CD's to PS3

Hey guys, I'm having a hard time using the search feature 2 narrow down my answer.... What are the best/recommended audio recording settings (on ps3) when importing music from standard cd's? I have a pretty good sound system, but when I change the download options (bitrate, AAC, frequency, crossfade, bitmapping) I dont notice a difference. Thanks 4 your help in advance... I just want to get the setting set, so I can get the best out of my CD's.... because I dont want to double dip on everything I already own (by getting the mp3's).

Keep the bitrates as high as possible when you import your cds as MP3's. The other options are not so important to sound quality on the PS3.

Hey Kent, thanks for the reply. So, you recommend to convert these files to mp3 instead of AAC? Then make the bitrate as high as possible. Does this actually improve the quality of my tracks?

Anytime you use a lossy codec such as MP3 or AAC, you will lose quality. If you choose a high enough bitrate, you may not notice the difference. Try 192Kbps or 256Kbps AAC.

Yeah AAC is better than .mp3, pick a high bitrate.

Why are you burning them to your PS3?

If you happen to have a home network, I would suggest you get a 500MB - 1TB external NETWORKED hard drive. I would burn them to FLAC or ALAC.

I use TVersity with a couple add-ins in order to stream my ALAC files to either a PS3 or D-Link Media Server. I'm considering Apple TV, but need to confirm that I can "pass-through" DTS encoded files and hear them rather than static garbage noise. By the way, I am running Vista 64-bit on my "server".

Otherwise, use the highest bitrate in the AAC setting (I thought it was 320Kbps).

Why would you need the Apple TV when you have a PS3?

HAHAHA. Yeah, you know 500MB is the coolest fad. Obviously, I meant 500GB.

Anyway, the downside of the PS3 is the it converts all streamed songs to 48kHz from their native 44.1kHz. I know to some this may not be a big deal, but when you have some songs that are DTS encoded and WILL NOT PLAY at 48kHz, this is a big deal.

I know that I could burn them to CD and play them, but what fun is that when you are showing off your system. BTW, the D-Link that I have is probably 6 years old and it doesn't convert the songs, so I know it has nothing to do with TVersity.

I've received mixed answers as to whether they work with the Apple TV. I think I will need to bite the bullet and get one for my birthday and test it for myself.

DTS 5.1 from Apple TV
In addition to stereo cables, Apple TV also features a Toslink digital optical port. Since we can send raw digital audio data over the Apple TV's optical output, can't we send DTS digitally encoded 5.1 as well?

Of course we can. Download a DTS sample file in WAV format, drop it into iTunes, and Apple TV will happily sync it and play it. Unlike Pro Logic audio, it will sound like static over regular stereo speakers, but hooked up to a DTS receiver, it is decoded into 5.1 channels of sound and played back in real DTS 5.1 surround.

The only limitation with DTS 5.1 sound right now is that Apple isn't offering it on its own movie downloads. The Apple TV can certainly “do it,” because it doesn't have to “do” anything; it merely passes it on to the 5.1 DTS decoder that anyone with 5.1 surround speakers already has.

The PlayStation and Xbox models with digital surround sound similarly output AC3 data over their Toslink optical outputs to a receiver to decode into six channels.

May be a bit off subject here.....how do you get the PS3 to recognize the name and artist of the track like the 360 does? I love my PS3 but so far I would rate the 360 better for ease of use on music. But then again, its probably because I don't know what I'm doing.

You have to be hooked up to the internet. Go to the CD icon of the album youre trying to listen to. Should say unknown album or something like that. Push triangle and select "obtain cd information". A list pops up and then pick the one you know is correct - done!
