Default PS3 Slim Hard Drive Upgrade

**(UPDATED WITH DRIVE REMOVAL PICS)**

OK, got the new Slim today and decided to take the 320 GB HD out of the old 60GB launch PS3 that started overheating on me...

Removal of the drive is easy enough...

1. There is a little door on the bottom front of the PS3 that hides the screw (blue) that needs to be uncovered and then removed FIRST (I am using a Stanley #1 Phillips screwdriver from a kit numbered 66-052 purchased at Walmart for less than $8 - this driver works perfectly for all the screws you will need to remove and has not stripped any screw head on me yet)

Note: the screw is longer than that one that comes with the fat PS3 - just keep turning the screwdriver until it comes free

2 - the front cover with all the logos then comes off and the drive is inside (MAKE SURE THE SCREW IS REMOVED FIRST! The cover LOCKS with a hold screw pass through)

Slide the cover to the right and it comes off - no need to pry it off

3 - pull the drive cage out (no moving to the right to unlock like in the fat version)

4 - the drive is bottom screwed into the cage (as opposed to side in the fat version) - be careful and don't strip the screws

5 - the drive lifts out of the cage, the side without the lip 1st and then the side with the lip second - the spring clips in the cage do NOT need to be lifted off the drive
(Notice the lip on the right side - lift the drive out from the left and slide the drive to the left to clear the lip)

6 - reverse the order to insert the new drive
7 - once you power back on, make sure you have a drive (USB - thumb or disk) with the following set-up in the root folder "PS3\UPDATE" (in windows it would be a folder called "PS3" in the main directory and a folder called "UPDATE" inside that folder
(like this)

8 - go to this link and download the update software to the directory you just created http://www.us.playstation.com/Suppor...PC_Update.html

8 - plug the USB into the PS3 and power it on - you will get this screen:

9 - Press and hold "start" and "select" simultaneously - you will then get:

then get:

10 - Press and hold "start" and "select" simultaneously for at least 5 seconds and you will get

Then you get:

Then you get:

11 - Press the PS button on the controller and you will get

and the update will proceed as normal

This will be helpful for people I'm sure. Marine Mike should put a link to this in his "Tips, Tricks" thread.

So, all of your old data on the 320gb stayed intact and is working fine?

Thank you for this! I just ordered my Slim through Amazon and have a 400gb drive to put in it, so I was curious about the process vs the Fatty.

Out of curiosity, when you say the drive mounts into the brackets from the bottom and not the side, how exactly does that work when a hard drive's screw mounts are on its side? Or am I mis-interpreting your comment?

FYI - if you name your USB thumb drive "PS3", you don't need to do ./PS3/Update/ because it counts the drive name as the root folder. You just need ./Update/

It would be too soon for a 3.0 update on any PS3 and the PS3 slim would have it's finishing touches when 2.80 was released. Now if the PS3 Slim were finished after the 3.0 update then it will have the 3.0 update included.

No - I had to back it up (well, back up as much as I could before my old unit froze up from overheating) - if you can perform a backup to a portable HD, then you will in essence copy over all games, saves, videos, pictures and account information.

Mine wouldn't stay up long enough for the full back-up so I just copied over videos and game saves with frequent power offs and cool downs

The laptop hard drives have screw mounts on side and bottom (circuit board side) and share the same piece of machined metal with screw holes on the side and bottom. Take a look at your 400GB drive to see what I am talking about

Honestly, I was looking for the side screws and couldn't find them and then I tried prying up the spring clips and realized the screws were on the bottom.

2.76 but I upgraded to make sure the thing didn't freeze up on me as it was doing an upgrade (and I could return it)

Nice tutorial! Seems like an easy swap.

But why update through a USB flash drive? Can't you insert the new hard drive and update through the PS3 System Update?

The New PS3 will not format the new drive unless you have the system update available (at least for me)
I don't know if you leave it @ 2.76 and then swap it out if it does the same thing or if it was just because my drive was from a machine already upgraded to 2.8 BUT I did read something (Engadget maybe?) where they said the same thing-you needed the update on a flash drive to swap out the hard drive

Yes you need to DL the current bios from somewhere to a thumbdrive and plug it in then it will allow the upgrade.
