After reading this thread today, I was curious about the bluray.com reviews for the franchise. The fifth review in the series, by Martin Liebman, hit the nail on the head in the first paragraph:

"The Saw series of films represent something of a conundrum for cinephiles. On one hand, there is no denying that the films are, superficially, just the latest seemingly never-ending Horror franchise; a new entry shows up every Halloween just like clockwork. The films also follow the Horror franchise formula precisely -- the first film is easily the best in the series. It's an original, fascinating, and entertaining journey into true terror, structured around a well-constructed plot and good characterization, supported by fine acting from several notables. As the series moved along, through several more entries, it grew less and less novel and more and more gory, sacrificing originality and tension for style and blood. On the other hand, the films deserve an enormous amount of credit for at least trying to construct a true franchise that builds layer upon layer, film after film, all the entries tying in together and telling one cohesive (though not always completely coherent) story. Appreciating the latter films in the series requires at least passing knowledge of the previous entries, with an in-depth understanding of the plots and characters the ideal. As alluded to heretofore, the formula hasn't worked quite as well as it may have. The premises remain intriguing, but the underlying story of Jigsaw seems lost under the elaborate traps and copious amounts of gore.......Saw V is one of the better entries in the series, perhaps topping all of them save for the first."

The writing really is clever, the way the storyline all comes together throughout the series is very big draw for me. But the movies aren't perfect by any means. Anyway, well said/reviewed, Mr. Liebman.

I will say, however, this series IS NOT for the squeamish, or even slightly squeamish....it's nasty!

Didn't Jigsaw die in the third one?

Yes. Which is why I've been surprised they've managed to keep the movies as good as they have.

Here's to hoping one day they will no longer be profitable so the studio will no longer make them. At least I have still have the option not to go see them.

With the Saw movies, I've never bothered to keep up with the storyline because its cheesy. I only watch the Saw movies for their infamous torture scenes.

Now the third Jigsaw just kills. Even the reasons he picked his victims was lost along the way. The people he picked had reason for being there, now its anyone and everyone. Now Jigsaw is picking on Health Insurance executives. What is he, an Obama supporter?

I know these make a ton of money, and as a fan of Halloween and F13, I have no right to complain about sequels, but at least they try to do something different every time.

Full disclosure, I havent seen anything past SAW 3. Just bits and pieces.
I agree with you. I went to see SAW and enjoyed it, and I also saw the sequels (up to three). Now, they're getting a bit ridiculous and should probably stop after SAW 6 (which is totally unnecessary, IMO).

As long as people continue to pay money to go see them they will make them. Anything for a quick buck, just like all the poorly made horror movie remakes coming around.
Movies that are MIA on Blu-ray. 1. Pink Floyd:The Wall (1982) 2. Naked Lunch (1991) 3. La Cage aux Folles (1979) 4. Fame (1980) 5. The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976) 6. Sixteen Candles (1984) 7. The Changeling (1980) 8. Notorious (1946) 9. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) 10. Dracula (1931 & 1979) 11. The Big Chill 12. Beavis and Butt-Head Do America

According to Wikipedia Saw V made over 130 million with a budget of only 10 million.

I know you guys know I was being sarcastic, but WOW!

I thought the first one was excellent, I proceeded to shut #2 off. Gave 3 a chance and did the same.

I didn't think these movies gradually got worse at all, they instantly got terrible! But hey, to each their own. People actually paid to see Hostle.

It'd be great if somehow it lost more money than it cost to make. Maybe they get sued somehow, and pay billions in fines. I'd laugh.

The Saw sequels make me embarrassed to admit I like/own the first one.

I've never seen this movies since they aren't my type of film, but there is NO doubt that they are extremely profitable for the studio, so no telling when they'll stop (there was some story posted a while back that 8 and 9 were possible I think).

Here's the numbers as per boxofficemojo:

Saw

Production budget: $1.2 million

Domestic: $55,185,045
Foreign: $47,911,300
Worldwide: $103,096,345

Saw II

Production budget: $4 million

Domestic: $87,039,965
Foreign: $60,700,000
Worldwide: $147,739,965

Saw III

Production budget: $10 million

Domestic: $80,238,724
Foreign: $84,635,551
Worldwide: $164,874,275

Saw IV

Production budget: $10 million (from Wikipedia)

Domestic: $63,300,095
Foreign: $76,052,538
Worldwide: $139,352,633

Saw V

Production budget: $10.8 million

Domestic: $56,746,769
Foreign: $57,110,764
Worldwide: $113,857,533

So for the five films on a expenditure of approximately $37 million they received a return of $668,920,751 from just the box office, not even factoring in TV deals or home video sales.

They've made their investment back more than 18 times over just factoring in box office returns

those numbers have to be inflated. I refuse to believe those sequels brought in those kind of returns.

No synopsis for Big Tits Zombie.

(don't think it needs one, fellas. Pretty self explanatory.)
