Default Blu-Ray Video Quality/Presentation...Something Missing

hey,

Right before CC went out of business, I looked at Blu-Ray players. They had Transformers playing and another movie that I cannot remember right now. When I saw the Blu-Ray movies playing, I was amazed at how surreal the video looked in each. It was almost as if the characters and objects in the movies were shiny, glossy, glowing or something. It looked...well, surreal.

Here is the thing, I have since watched friends Blu-Ray players both standard deck and PS3 and while the picture quality is great (HD) it does not look surreal like the ones did at CC.

Is there something I am or my friends are missing in the setup of their BR players?

Thanks,

Guapo

What you saw was probably "Motion Flow", or a similarly named configuration depending on the Brand of the Display, enabled on a 120hz display.

This is a selling point that the stores use to entice buyers into buying displays. Not all displays are capable of doing this.

Never trust any TV that you see in a "big box" showroom (or any place else for that matter). You can bet your last dollar on; 1) the TVs are adjusted for maximum attention grabbing (in other words, set way off), or 2) never setup at all. The odds of them being set correctly is near zero.

Also, they will be playing the best BD they can find. Watchout for the last Batman release that includes scences shot in IMAX, which for provide for fantastic detail and color.

A properly setup HDTV & Blu-ray player will provide a great viewing and listening experience; just becareful in showrooms.

Yes, they probably had the brightness and colors settings to "radiation alert". I have seen this many times in TV showrooms.

Frys does the same thing.
Has the setting on maximum brightness and usually has Transformers or some Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks animation running with AMP/Motionflow on full blast.

Believe me, the AMP/Montionflow is a cool gimic but you will become tired of it quickly after all your movies look like soap operas.

This. What you saw is not a feature of Blu-ray. It's a (horrible, ridiculous) feature of certain 120Hz displays and is one of the worst things to happen to CE products in a long time, in my opinion. It is causing confusion among consumers about Blu-ray when it has nothing to do with Blu-ray directly.
rotation report (my media consumption)
splatter of light (my creative output)

Neither of your sets have AMP or Motionflow type options.
Usually it's newer TV's with 120/240hz @ 1080p that have these options/features.
