Default Disappointing Panasonic Plasma 42" TC-P42S1 with DMP-BD60 (Did I miss something?)

Hi to all,
I have Panasonic blu-ray player DMP-BD60 and I am looking for a 42" FullHD.

My brother in law has the HDTV Panasonic Plasma TC-P42S1, which I believed It was a good option. I asked him If I could try my blu-ray player (DMP-BD60) in his screen and he accepted.

Buuuuuuuuut, I was very very disappointing when I found that the motion flow or the blur motion looks the same as my Samsung 32" LCD Not FullHD.

What I have read is that Plasma screens don't have blur between each frames because of the technology.

And also, a friend of mine has a LG 42" LCD FullHD 120hz and it was very very AMAZING !!!

Did I miss something in the setup or any configuration ???

Thanks.
TV: Samsung 32" LN32A330 720p/1080i LCD

Hmm. I have the TC-46S1 and the BD-60 and I couldn't be happier. I bought both in July for under $1000 combined. I still can't believe how little I paid for the combined pair. But I digress...

I don't see any motion blur at all. Are you referring to judder? It's a slightly different phenomenon due to transferring film (24fps) to video (typically 60fps). LCDs that operate at 120Hz or 240Hz help "solve" this problem by interpolating frames (adding frames that are not in the original source) to smooth out the picture. This leads to the so-called "soap opera effect" which makes film look like home video. Some people like this effect. Personally, I think it is atrocious and unwatchable.

The S1 will have better black levels, better viewing angles, and faster pixel response times than any LCD. I don't think you can buy a better TV/BD combo for the money than the S1/BD60 pair.

.
The 120hz and 240hz refresh rates do not cause the "soap opera effect". Most LCDs have motion enhancement settings that produce that look, which can be turned off.

Oh, ok.

Maybe I needed to configure something else.

Now that you are mentioning this, I forgot to enable the 24p option in the Bluray.

Do you think that could be the reason?

Default Panny plasma

Has your brother-in-law calibrated his TV with a calibration disc ? If not, that could be a big part of the problem. An uncalibrated TV may display a lot of unnatural artifacts as well as poor picture quality.

If you have 24p turned on in the player, try turning it off. 1080p/60hz will likely be smoother on the S1. But really, on both of my Panny plasmas, I can't tell any difference between having 24p on or off. The S1 won't have the artificial motion enhancement that your friends LCD has. Plasmas produce natural motion that approximates the look of film better than any LCD.

I believe it is a setting or something. Plasma and LCD are two totally different technologies and so they process information differently. LCD just adds more frames in between to smooth things out and this will also cause lag and audio sync issues as well.... plasma doesn't do this.

I have heard of the G10 flickering with blu-ray play but there was a firmware update that supposedly resolved this issue. Other than that, the plasmas are pretty solid performers when it comes to HD/ blu-ray play without relying on dejuddering features that just make things worse, IMO.

DevilsFan,
Something that could make mi happier as you are now is the current setting that you have in both the TV and Bluray to recreate this 'happiness'.

Do you think it's possible?

That would be great.

Motion interpolation is not unique to LCD and it only adds frames if you set motion interpolation to "ON" - it is a user-controlled setting.

I have not heard of any lag or audio sync issues caused by motion interpolation, even though I personally don't like the effect.

I don't have any obscure settings enabled. In fact, I've never touched any settings on the BD60 (except to turn off BD-Live functionality). Two things I have done are update to the latest firmware on the BD60 (2.1 now) and calibrate the S1 by adjusting the service menu settings. That process is beyond the scope of this forum, however.
