I must confess I've never seen this movie-- and I love Bogart films!
I don't think it's ever been available on home video before-- this will
be a must-buy!

It's actually been on home video numerous times. A few laserdisc releases including a deluxe package, a few VHS releases and about a dozen Region 2 DVD releases throughout Europe. Just never a Region 1 DVD for some reason (and obviously not on blu-ray until now).

i just hope they take a lesson from the restored versions of Wizard Of Oz and Gone With The Wind to know how to restore this all time classic correctly.

Did you read the announcement?

Quote:
A six-year journey filled with challenges nearly as difficult as those faced by Rose and Charlie, the restoration process began at the source: Romulus Films —one of the film's original production companies— provided access to the original three-strip negative at a London facility where the film was carefully scanned and digitized. The separate elements were then transferred to Los Angeles and painstakingly recombined and inspected frame by frame to ensure that every detail aligned and that any dirt and scratches were removed.

To ensure that the restored picture matched the filmmakers' original vision, Paramount arranged a screening of an MPAA archive print for the film's original cinematographer, Academy Award winner Jack Cardiff, whose comments were recorded live during the screening. That same archival print was later screened alongside the newly restored version so that the restoration team could ensure that all of Cardiff's notes had been addressed. The result is a vibrant, warm picture that reverentially recreates the film as it was originally meant to be seen.

Very nice to see 2 versions available from day one. A collectors edition and a bare bones version for those not interested in the extra goodies.

Nice decision Paramount.
Because Calamari Marionette Ph.D sounded pompous, that's why.

Great news, a true classic! I had been waiting many years for its release on DVD, so the upcoming BD release will be even better. The other DVD holdout I have been waiting for is "Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder", which is only available on VHS.

The list price for the 1-disc is only $26.99? Wow, I would have bet money this would have been a Sapphire Series release.

I am always ready to do the pointing

On topic, I can't wait to view this movie on Blu. All I had for the past 10 years was an old VHS copy and then just the horrible version that was on TV once and a while. To see it receive the restoration this masterpiece deserve will be outstanding. It's going to be a nice long quiet movie night on March 23 for me

Will there be an SD release?. I have family members who haven't gone Blu and this is something they'd want to see, too.
The past tense of the verb "cast" (as in "to select an actor for a role") is not "casted." It's "cast." You would say they "cast" Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, not that they "casted" Ian McKellan as Gandalf.
----
How the hell did I wind up with this many Blu-rays?

I'll probably pick this one up eventually. Not day 1 though. March is already expensive enough for me with all of Disney's releases. Haha
