Default Projector screen vs. wall paint????

Hi guys

I bought myself a Sanyo PLV-Z2000 projector for a good price. I'm in the process of building my HT Room from scratch. The screen size will be 157" wide x 89" high...diagonally 181". I got a quote yesterday for a permanent projector screen mounted on the wall. The price is really high, so I was wondering how much quality I will loose if I just paint the wall white/gray instead of the screen? Specific type of paint I can use?Any advice/opinions will be great? I know you can get paint specifically to paint your wall to work as a screen(Goo). As I live in South Africa I don't know where in SA to get it, any ideas? The room will be very dark with very little ambient light

It will depend on your wall. Are there a lot of blemishes on the wall? if so they will stand out when viewing. Also have you tried viewing it on the wall at that size. I feel that you may not be able to get great picture (Not enough light output.) without spending ALOT of money on a high end projector.

I'm busy building the room. It will be plastered smoothly with cement, so hopefully no blemishes. I tested the Sanyo on one of my existing walls and the picture looked great, although the colour was not right due the the colour my wall is painted. I didn't see any pixulations etc. The Manual of the projector states that you can have a screen size of up to 200". My room will be dark as there will be no windows, only ambient light which will be controllable with a dimmer switch.

Hey Termdj, you might want to give Driver_King a shout. He has built his own DIY screen and might be able to help you out if you decide to go down the DIY wall screen. His gallery (http://www.blu-ray.com/community/gal...&folderid=1347) shows his screen along with some screen caps.

I have seen several other DIY screen on here as I have clicked through galleries but I cannot remember who. If I find out I will let you know. Hope this helps!

Hi all, I've just begun research for my HT, and wanted to chime in on this thread, because I'm considering going the painted screen route myself (primarily due to funds). In my brief research I've come across a product called Screen Goo. I'd recommend it here, from what I've read it performs very well, and is a sub-$300 option. Google it, check out the site, and check some reviews online. I'm very intrigued.

USA Focupix

I've been watching the threads on Focupix Screens for quite awhile and overall people have been very happy with them. Focupix monitors the threads also and seems very customer service oriented. From what I can tell, any defects that are noted are fairly common amongst most brands and the price is MUCH less. They sell electric models as well.

Guys

I decided to try someting different. if it doesn't work I will go with the screen. First I will have the wall plastered as smooth as possible. Then some bonding liquid mixed with Rhino lite and get the surface as smooth as possible...Then some sandpaper to iron out any bumps etc. I will then mask off my screen area and build a frame and paint.

Good luck....I know if it done right, you will get an excellent picture from your wall.......make sure to take some pics of during your build and after, with some screen shots too!

I'm currently doing the before pictures... it's raining a lot here and hampering the whole building process. I'm 3 weeks behind schedule as things are standing now.If everything goes well, I will be able to install the condutes for the electricity and speaker wires next week. Can't waiot for everything to be finished
