This is the animated one, right?

I wonder when they'll get around to releasing The Hobbit??

It's worth watching, but a word of caution: this version ends after the Battle of Helms Deep, which is about half way through the actual story of LOTR. When I saw it in the theater and it suddenly ended, the audience was unpleasantly surprised.

I've never seen this.

I guess the BD will be a good opportunity to see it for the first time.

Never seen it either, LOL. Looks like WB is going all out on this one.

They never got to make the sequel, but far from Bakshi's best animated work.

I think the animated Gollum in the Hobbit and Return of the King looks better. More like a monster.

I like this a lot. I really liked the depiction of Aragorn in it. More true to the book.

The folks that did the hobbit also did Return of the King. It was sort of a Half-assed attempt to finish Bakshi's work. Right now on Amazon, you can get a 3-pack of Bakshi's LOTR, Rankin-Bass' Hobbit and Return of the King.

There were several things in Bakshi's version that was more true to the book than Jackson's:

1) The reason Merry and Pippin were on the quest.
2) Frodo alone on the horse at the Ford of Bruinen
3) Bilbo at the Council of Elrond.
4) Gandalf's desire to go through Moria.
5) The snowstorm that cause them to go through Moria not being of Saruman's design
6) The depiction of Lady Galadriel
7) The breaking of the Fellowship

On the other hand, Bakshi must have been on drugs having Saruman called "Saruman" in some places and "Aruman" in others.

The voice work in those is great, and I also like the animation style (anime-ish).

I'm surprised they didn't include those with this and just make it a whole package. I rewatch the animated Hobbit often, but the animated LotR? Meh. I'll pick it up when it drops to the ~$10 range.

Have you ever watched the animated Return of the King?
