Departed certainty would not need a remasted edition as the first was excellent.. so that sucks they are not actually fixing the issues :/

Well, based on the news today, we know Amazon's source; now we just need Jeff's source to start singing the same tune .

I still doubt this, but if is in fact remastered - I'll definitely be buying. Certainly not a perfect film, but great nonetheless. The bad history of transfers has kept me from buying it thusfar. I'd love to own this film properly done.

He said he's checked twice with his contact inside Disney, with the second time being within the last month. Both times the answer was a definite no to remastering, just academy award slipcover nonsense. The cover highdefdigest is showing just reflects the academy award slipcover as well - no mention of "special edition" or anything like that.

Jeff said he will now check a third time. He says the sell sheet just says "new digital restoration" which in my mind is generic enough to be worthless - they say that kind of stuff for every catalogue release. The same sell sheet also says PCM Audio, which Disney does not use anymore, also implying this is the same disc they previously released - one would think any new version would use DTS-HD MA since that is Disney's new favorite. I don't know how highdefdigest and blu-ray.com can see an academy award slipcover and "new digital restoration" in a bullet list and jump to the conclusion that this is TRULY remastered and fixed from the last Blu-ray version, I feel it is kind of irresponsible reporting given the situation here - but hey, maybe they know something I don't. As of now, I am still EXTREMELY doubtful that this release will be any different from the previous one.

Just to chime in here with an important fact, regardless of sell sheets or marketing sizzle.

Gangs of New York should need no restorative efforts, digital or otherwise.

Scan the OCN or IP, clean any physical dirt, color, down-rez and render with HD LUT, touch up color correction and make a Blu-ray. If an IP is accessed for scan, color becomes greatly simplified.

The sell sheet "only" said New Digital Restoration? That pretty much gives it away as a remastered edition.

The picture at highdefdigest does not a slipcase. It's a brand new sleeve.

Marketing photos are normally bad for distinguishing between artwork inserts and slipcovers - they have special "advertisement" versions of the covers in promotional materials, and the real deal usually looks slightly different, especially from Disney. But regardless, even if it really is a new artwork insert, it STILL is just the Academy Award nonsense that ALL studios do this time of year. There is nothing on that cover that implies this edition is truly fixed.

And they say "digital restoration" and that kind of junk all the time. Such a statement does not actually mean anything without details and context to go with it. Very telling to me is the PCM Audio soundtrack the disc is listed to have - the same as the last disc. That is a specific detail, not a generic advertising phrase.

And it'd be very, VERY odd for them to keep the same audio track as they didn't even keep the same one for No Country For Old Men.

If a title from Disney were to come out with PCM, it would probably mean the disc was pressed a long long time ago. If this is indeed a remaster, then there's no way it was pressed long ago enough to have a PCM track on it.

I'm with neo on this one... I am very skeptical that this is a remaster. But if it is indeed, lets hope they set up some sort of exchange/rebate program for those who actually bought the title.

It also only lists the single extra that was on the previous disc (if I recall, I don't have it), and there were no screeners being sent out on the disc as of the last time I checked (which you'd think they'd want to do on an actual reissue)

I have zero doubt that a true reissue of GONY will be coming sooner rather than later, but I haver serious doubts that this is it

I also have a lot of doubts that I'll get anything back till Monday. Them's the holiday breaks guys

Just got an email back from Disney

It IS the new restoration, they just slipped it in under the radar without any fanfare, and didn't tell anyone in PR about it either

*sigh*

Rejoice!

Well it seems I was wrong. The information prior to this point did not inspire any large amount of faith in me, but I certainly hope Jeff's latest post does end up being true.

Really looking forward to this. Gangs of New York was one of the movies that changed my opinion of Leonardo DiCaprio. Plus Daniel Day Lewis is just awesome.
