Cool The Official "I Love You Phillip Morris" thread

WOW! This is gonna tick a LOT of people off. lol. I hear the usual suspects are ALREADY picketing Cannes.

This is the new film starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor which is based on a TRUE STORY! I can't even describe it without either ruining the shock of the trailer, or probably getting a warning. lol

NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

Wasn't this supposed to come out a year ago? I really want to see this one. The trailer was really good.

It's, not surprisingly, ran into some trouble getting distribution. lol. They had to re-edit it a few times, so I don't know if that was BEFORE or AFTER the stuff we saw in the trailer. I'd hate to see them have to lose that one shot near the beginning of the trailer (right after his "revelation"). That made laugh the hardest.

I Love You, Phillip Morris premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival to fairly good reviews, but distributors have been turned off by
[Show spoiler]“the graphic homosexual sex depicted in the film,”
and the film has yet to score domestic theatrical distribution, until now. Variety reports that the Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor comedy has finally been acquired by Consolidated Pictures Group for domestic distribution. An earlier report stated that the film was being re-edited in “a last ditch attempt to find an American distributor. It is unclear if the original cut or a new cut will be distributed to theaters in the U.S. And no word yet on a release date.

I have to say that Carrey deserves some major kudos for having the stones to do this. He's shown that he's very strong (in my opinion) when it comes to the serious stuff (Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Majestic, etc) and this looks like it has a bit of that, and a bit of the slapstick stuff he made his bones with.

Being a homosexual movie probably condemns it to a limited release like Milk.

Yea don't forget Man on the Moon as well. He really gets into his roles. I think his performance (both comical and dramatic) will help people overlook this homosexual dilemma.

There's a trailer online for this now. Looks really interesting. I think Carey and Mcgregor can really pull off something great with this.

So it's not about cigarettes?

Saw this movie yesterday afternoon. Thought it was HILARIOUS! Really did enjoy it and I cant believe it got pushed back so long in the US. Sure it was "risky", but it didnt seem as "risky" as other movies I have seen before. I guess people still get all worked up over stuff involving gays. People need to lighten up.

Will rent this on video. I saw the trailers but for some reason, strikes me as your "typical" Jim Carrey, over-the-top performance and the "stereotypical" gay role turned me off just looking at the movie posters. No wonder a lot of people are uneasy with gays because of how Hollywood portrays them. Why not more "gay movies" like Brokeback Mountain, where it's not so much about flamboyance or being different and standing out but more of an inner struggle or trying to fit in. The Kids Are Alright is another good movie of how gays are portrayed.

While I do agree with you on The Kids Are Alright being awesome and maybe Hollywood should sometimes tone down sometimes when portraying them I must also say that apart of me likes Phillip Morris MORE than Brokeback and Kids Are Alright because the people who made Phillip Morris accept gays for who they are and decide to just tell a wacky story. Instead of trying to make a serious film depicting gays they just accept gays for who they are(normal people like you and I) and try and make a silly movie like they do with straight people.

Might sound confusing...but blame me for my horrible wording.

I think I know what you're saying; I guess it's a comedy so it's alright. It's Jim Carrey's portrayal I guess that annoys me from the trailers-- his typical schtick. I enjoyed The Birdcage, too, and that was over-the-top and the scenarios were hilarious but it also raised issues on society's views of gays.

I saw this a long time ago at a friends house, generally i won't sit through a downloaded flick as the quality always sucks but i read how this was held up from North American distribution which i don't understand (plenty of crazy stuff out there someone ends up releasing), but it really was a great flick. Would love to get this on blu.

crap just saw how old this thread is, didn't realize it was a resurrection... any news on if this movie is actually hitting US shelves, its the best movie carry has done in a really long time.

It's still showing at the theaters so it won't probably get a Blu release for another 3-4 months.
