I just wanted to let you know about To be or not to be: the subtitles are not forced; as a matter of fact you have three audio options (English, French, German) and four subtitles options (French and German, hearing impaired French and German). Therefore you can see the film in its original version without subtitles if they bother you. I'd like to add that subtitles are not intrusive. This is good to know, because La grande illusion being a multilingual film, you might wish to use them for a better film experience.

I bought them both last Saturday at a French retailer - and watched them as a double feature. While the Lubitsch PQ is very good, I must say I was blown away by how incredible the Renoir film looks. The video quality is stellar. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best presentation I ever had for a movie from the 30s. Granted, it is not up to the standards of what you can see for later movies (such as Yôjimbo or Orpheus), but the people at Studiocanal did a great job. As for extras, it's near-to-perfect. There are subtitles for the early silent short, the introduction of the movie by Renoir himself, trailers, documentaries, etc.

I must say I'm very impressed with this release. Already up there in the very best Blu-Rays available.

DukeOfPrunes - Thanks for the info! Can you confirm whether there is a country menu on these discs and if the UK is one of the options? Presumably if they're encoded like the other discs, then this menu will let everyone know what other countries these titles are going to be released in. Would also help me decide whether to import 'To Be Or Not To Be' or wait...

I'd also like to know that. I'm itching to get To Be Or Not To Be. (To buy or not to buy... Sorry...)

Most certainly.

La grande illusion
Deutschland - France - United Kingdom

La Grande Illusion Blu-ray

To be or not to be
Deutschland - France

So it doesn't look like the Lubitsch will be released in UK as part of the Studiocanal series. Maybe they're planning an Optimum-Studiocanal Blu-Ray under the Vintage Classics collection? The movie does have a touch of British humour.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks! I'm presuming StudioCanal don't have the UK rights (like other titles in the series) as I'm sure they would release it as part of this collection in the UK if so... Looks like I'll be making an Amazon.fr order very shortly!

A word of warning to those considering buying To Be Or Not To Be: Although you can watch with the original audio, there are a few instances of forced subtitles even with subtitles turned 'off'. They translate text (the title, a letter, a note on the back of a photograph) and song lyrics. Now I know those subtitles are there, I'll try my best to ignore them next time I watch it, but if a version from an English-speaking country comes out, I'll definitely be replacing this release.

EDIT: I take it back, you just have to turn the subtitles off via the player settings, not the disc menu. Carry on, nothing to see here...

The language, I think having it shipped direct to me will save us both money.

OK. Oh bummer, I totally forgot that Discshop Sweden offers shipping only within EU.

Discshop Finland is selling Studio Canal Collection titles for only 8.95€ but they're temporarily out of stock. However, that was the case when I ordered mine and they shipped it extra quickly. Unfortunately they do not offer international shipping.

I might be willing to help some members here to get a copy if there's enough demand. Let me know if you're interested.

The following SCC titles are 8.95€($11.95) each or you can buy 2 for 15€($20.00):

-Ran
-The Deer Hunter
-The Graduate
-The Pianist
-The Elephant Man
-3 Days of the Condor
-Ladykillers
-Last Year in Marienbad
-Le Mépris

It's too bad Mulholland Drive wasn't sold in Scandanavia like all the others. Otherwise it would be quite easy (and cheaper) to get a hold of, at least for those who live here.

I guess you can ship it to me then. I'll fork over a few more dollars for the superior release.

Remember to watch it with the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 on. Otherwise you get that horrible "Pal-Speed Up" effect! Seriously, what happened there? They really should've consider revising that before shipping them out for sale!

Yup. Same goes for the Le Cercle Rouge. Also the Scandinavian version of Belle de jour is now OOP.
