Default The Movie Review and Discussion Thread

I thought I would drag over this new topic from boards.ign.com. Let's see how well it works out.

Diabolique 9.5/10 (original not remake)

This is my second time watching this film and I like it just as much as the first. The reason for watching it again is because I received the Criterion DVD for Christmas. The movie was an inspiration for Hitchcock to go above and beyond with Psycho. I feel Diabolique is a little better than Psycho, but not by much. Maybe it's because of Psycho's popularity that just wears in you. Psycho will always be a classic.

Now, i would have given Diabolique a 10, but I feel the running time could have been trimmed 10-15min. I even think Psycho can be a bit long as well.

I highly recommend Diabolique to any fan of suspense, horror, and foreign films.

Sleep Away Camp. I read a bunch of recommendations that said it was good cheesey horror fun.

Six minutes in I wanted to kill the actors because the were so bad. Maybe the .... no.... THE worst acting I have erver seen.

Turned it off at about the eight minute mark.
Because Calamari Marionette Ph.D sounded pompous, that's why.

Not Easily Broken - Starring Morris Chestnut & Taraji P. Henson.

Its about a couples trying to make a marriage work going through several events and obstacles that seem to get in the way. Very powerful and moving. I wasnt sure if it would be any good but I was surprised. I liked this film! I would give this film 7.5/10! Got Em!!

Final Destination

The PQ is very good on the release and the sound is acceptable. The CGI (explosions) look fake. The kills are average, and we have seen it all before. I'll give it extra credit for hiring the redhead . 2/5: A rental at best.
Most anticipated release: The Hidden Fortress

Iron Man - 8.0/10

Robert Downey Jr. - great job as always
Story... well, pretty average and could see the villain coming a mile away

PQ and AQ = amazing.

But, I don't know. I just didn't get the sense that this film had alot of heart. But maybe that's the point since Tony Stark is kind of a dick, but has a soft spot towards the end (who didn't see that coming?)

District 9

10/10

Movie was excellent, great sci-fi, and original idea with plenty of subtext and real world event based subject matter.

BLU: PQ 10, AQ 10 ... menu 1/10 laggy as all hell and a pain to operate.

Forrest Gump (blu)

Film: 10/10

PQ: 5/5 (incredible detail, I noticed stuff I've never seen before)

Saw that recently as well, very good...9/10

I have to watch it again, because I wasn't paying 100% attention the whole time and ran into this problem with it later on....
[Show spoiler]It's supposed to be a mockumentary, then he becomes a fugitive and no one can find him...except for the camera crew with him.

If this gripe is resolved and I missed it, then the review would go up by .5.

Dr Strangelove

Film: 10/10

PQ: 5/5

AQ: 4/5

incredible film. sellers is phenomenal in 3 parts (he almost played 4: including the pilot part of slim pickens). my favorite performance is George C. Scott: he does things in this film that nobody else can do and they work. falling over backwards and getting up saying "they're getting read to clobber us!!!". i dont know if him falling over was a mistake (looked like it), but his ability to finish the line while tumbling over was just gut-busting! a film that welcomes repeated viewings.

Up In The Air

I give it two definite thumbs up. It's cute, it's tragic, and it has a lot of great feel good moments. I love George Clooney anyway, but I do think this is his best work to date. Vera Farmiga is absolutely beautiful and she did a wonderful job. Never I was more surprised at how well Anna Kendrick can act.

It's a wonderful movie.

District 9

One of the most original and absorbing science fiction films I've ever seen! D9 and Avatar are the best of 2009!
How I like my Blu-rays: 1.78:1 ratio or go home!

Movies I cannot wait for: 127 Hours, Tron Legacy, Thor, Captain America

I totally agree with you about the acting. It's atrocious, but let me tell you something..... The last 5-10 minutes of that movie will make your head spin like Linda Blair and ask yourself "Is this the same director who made the first 80 minutes of this movie?" It will be and ending that will stick with you forever!!
