No thanks, not for me. 3D is not enough to make me return to theaters and watch them at $13. I would rather have a BD and be at home, quiet and in peace.

I agree that I dont care to go see them again in the theater, but this is cool news since that means we would see them on BR in 3d after the theatrical run

Peter Jackson is clearly open to the idea

The Hobbit is being shot in 3D 5k Red Epic cameras. Id say whether we will see the first trilogy in 3D probably depends on the success of the 3D conversions of Titanic and The Phantom Menace next year. If those conversions are a success Id say the probablity of seeing conversions of the first trilogy sometime after both the Hobbit movies premire is very likely

The earliest possible date for seeing the Lord of the Rings movies in 3D is 2014 and even thats not a given. So if your a hardcore Rings fan I would not use the possibility of a conversion as grounds to avoid the excellent current extended edition set

Why?!?!?!?!?!?

The movie has several epic scenes that benefit greatly from the third dimension. A 3D conversion will take alot of time and care but if done properly will be amazing. Also Peter Jackson is clearly a fan of 3D. He is working on The Adventures of Titin and shooting the Hobbit with native 3D cameras (in awsome 5k no less awsome). If you love 3D why do you not believe it won't benefit Lord of the Rings?

I just think LOTR is a beautiful 2D work of art, and it should stay that way. It was built from the ground up as a 2D image, and IMO should not be converted to 3D.

But of course I cant wait for the hobbit movies in amazing 48fps 3D. And maybe even the Silmarillion after that *fingers crossed*

So what?!?!?!??!

Gollum was not present in the original shoot as well. Should he be removed from the movie?

A 3D conversion is no different than any other visual effects enhancement done in post (to which a fantasy movie like Lord of the Rings was full of). If done badly it can be a disaster but if done well it can be a wonderful enhancement to the movie.

Id prefer if movies were shot in 3D instead of converted as well which is why Im glad Jackson has choosen Native 3D for The Hobbit (In 48 frames per second 5k no less). However with permission of the original filmmakers I love that conversion gives us the ability to enjoy the classics of cinemas past in 3D.

Assuming the films ever actually get converted, you would still have the option to NOT purchase them.

That's amazing isn't it - choice

Exactly. People act like if the movies are converted to 3D there current 2D Blu-Rays will magically fail to play. Not to mention any future 3D Blu-Ray will of course have a 2D option. Maybe with 3D on the disc spreading the movies over two discs might actually have a justification beyond marketing BS

You do realize that even if they release a 3D version, you dont have buy it?

It is not going to make the 2D versions stop playing. Its not going to make all the 2D versions explode.

I want LOTR in 3D. Dont like it, dont buy it. Simple as that.

I am tired of people always thinking they are forced to buy something. So they speak out against it, hoping it doesnt get made.

I was just watching "return of the king" last night and was thinking how amazing it would look in 3D.But you would have to buy extra batteries for the glasses.

I've been watching them on blu this week. I occasionally switch to 3d conversion mode. Some of it is great, but I miss the light in the scenes too much. Obviously converted well, adjustments could be made for that.
Now running in 3D with the LG Cinema 3D (nominally showing 3D in 1080i per eye) 47LW6500 (up-or-down-or-side-graded from a 50" Sammy 3D Plasma) and a Benq W1080ST and a 130" screen.
