Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Mystic River aren't going to be the dreaded flip discs will they when they get released on 02/02 are they?? I hate flippers and I know they start soon just i hope not these movies will have em.

Neither will be flippers / combo discs. Fear and Loathing is just a normal BD release from Universal. And Mystic River isn't even from Universal - it's from Warner Bros., and they have never announced any intentions to use the flipper/combo discs.

Oh well that's great news, I could have sworn I read it was Universal AND another company which I for some reason remembered as Warner. Well I am very happy for this news, thanks everybody!!

I'd like to see Criterion try and obtain the US rights to some of their laserdisc titles of old, like Lee Tamahori's "Once Were Warriors".

Universal is a terrific studio, I'm sure they'll do the title justice.

Please help me out here, why do people love this movie so much? Why has it achieves a cult like status? All it was to me was two guys going from one bad drug trip to another. What is so special about guys sniffing ether or puking in toilets?

Affirmative. It was a pretty expansive set. The original Universal DVD release, when it went OOP (out of print), was pretty sought after, because the Criterion was so expensive.

I remember hating this movie when I first saw it, but I was like 12, and have since grown to love it. And also realized it doesn't hurt to be under an influence of something to help enjoy the experience in all it's insanity.

You know, back when I lived in Germany, I remember choosing the German DVD over the US DVD because the US release was like $35 and the German was only 10 Euro. Granted all the material on the German DVD was mostly German, the movie had it's English audio and that's all that mattered to me.

I like the form of the film, the content is very entertaining but Hunter S. Thomson's style is very unique. Watch interviews with him and you'll see Johnny Depp was spot on (Benicio del Toro was also amazing in his role). I read the book with the same title and Hunter's style is just great. I also love Terry Gilliam's technique, great director IMO. I don't think anyone can help you out; either you like it or don't.

Every time I see an interview or hear Hunter talk, I only hear Johnny as Hunter cause it sounds like the same guy lol. Thompson cracks me up. I still loved reading in Sonny Barger's book about when Hunter traveled around with the Hell's Angels for awhile writing his book and got his ass kicked for making a very stupid remark to one of the Angels. They really hate that guy haha.

Ah, I remember, that's the one that I was going to buy. I've had my German DVD for about 5 years now. I break out and play it occasionally. I can only play it on my desktop and laptop now since my last Region All DVD player went kaput on me back in college.

I'd assume Criterion owns the rights to the bonus features, considering most of the special features are created for and during the "Criterion treatment" of a film.

It wasn't more expensive than the average Criterion release. You get what you pay for.

For the record, it was a lame movie and doesn't deserve Criterion blu-ray treatment.

I really cant say. But for me it is one of those rare movies that I can watch at certain times and love and think is brilliant (and wonder why at other times I don't like it). Then watch at other times and hate it and wonder what I ever saw in it. There is no pattern to this love/hate relationship and yet I find myself drawn to it again and again to re-watch it.

Another couple of movies that this happens to me with are "The Untouchables" and "Godzilla" (1999).
