What the heck is that supposed to mean? That doesn't make any sense.

I also have to wonder what the mean by large screens, I have a 83 inch screen which is about as "small" as you can go with a projector but I would still consider it large screen in terms of home video.

Hmm... I still see analong output on the back panel and component too (along with S-Vid and composite and optical.)

If they made a player with only HDMI output... I would have to pick that up. That would just be perfect for me.

Maybe a player like that will come along at some point.

I think it means you should be fine if you have a scaler in between the 80 and your projector or your projector has one and you use the 80 in 'source direct' mode.

But you don't have to use the analogue? Its just an option.

And you just might need to use component or RCA for diagnostics? HDMI is not fail safe

It's a good option. Some people don't have a full HDMI setup but...

I prefer all my eggs in the HDMI basket. Makes for a lot less wires and I love that.

HDMI is a bit sketchy I guess but it works in my setup.

It's not a big deal but I figure if they didn't have all those connections the player could be simpler and cheaper. When I saw the part about no analog output, I just got my hopes up a bit.

I may eventually replace my PS3 with an Oppo,... maybe,... so I like seeing what's new.

of course it still has analog outs, it states it does. It's just saying that the dedicated 2 channel out (for 2 channel sources etc) is now shared with the multi-ch 7.1 output. So for people that used to hook up dedicated L/R outputs to say the CD input on your AVR now will have it hooked to the multi-ch input and change the input you would normally use for 2 channels sources or split the front L/Rs and hook it into both the multi-ch and CD input if they wanted to keep it the same

I don't really understand this move by Oppo. I love my BDP-83, but Oppo is pricing this scaled down version much higher than say a Panasonic DMP-BD60, which is a pretty decent Bluray player.

I just went to look at the back player of a previous Oppo and finally understood what the "lack of" analog out was referring too.

It was a separate stereo output. Good for some users. Also nice to have the option not to have it for people who would never use it.

You cannot go by the price it is selling for now as it is basically being discontinued with the wave of new players forthcoming. Heck, last week the thing was $199 at BB. Are they crazy??

The BDP-80 does not have the BDP-83's ABT video processor, so the picture quality (specifically with DVD moreso than BD) won't be as good when you are really blowing up the image. Such large screens are some of the best places to show the value of the ABT processor.

Of course, if you have a separate video processor of some sort that is comparable to the ABT, then the BDP-80 and the "source direct" video output would be a great fit.

They aren't likely to offer a lot of different models, so I don't see a purely digital transport showing up for the time being. Of course, there's nothing that says you have to use the multichannel analog output.

People said the same thing about the BDP-83 relative to the BD80 and Sony S550. The BDP-83 has still sold a lot of units. The BDP-80 has multichannel analog outputs, just like the BD80 and S550 (something that the BD60 and S350 lack). Put simply, OPPO isn't trying to compete on price with the big corporations (economy of scale benefits them too much). They are competing on quality. Want to be able to call and get useful customer service? Want to be able to give the company feedback on what you like or don't like about the product? Want DVD-Audio and SACD support? Want a user manual that actually makes sense? Those are the things that OPPO is offering.

+1. I've had a few discussions (email) with them and they are top-notch for customer service. Others should take a page out of OPPO's customer service philosophy.
