Faust. It was on TFO (France HD channel) and it really looked wonderful.
Are we talking about the Sokurov version ? If so, I would really like them to release the complete tetralogy of his "corruptional" works! Moloch, Taurus, The Sun and Faust (Exploring the lives of Hitler, Lenin, Hirohito and Goethe's character respectively) in the same boxset would blow me away .

Sokurov's Faust is fantastic, by the way. No idea who has the US rights.

Finally got around to ordering the remaining Keaton sets I needed from the BN 40% sale. Our Hospitality/Seven Chances/Steamboat Bill, Jr. should ship tomorrow but I have to wait until Jan. 12 before Battling Butler/Go West ships.

Nope it was FW Murnau's Faust from 1926

Well, that sounds awesome too ! In fact, my MoC copy of Sunrise should be just around the corner at the moment, today or tomorrow. I still think such a boxset dedicated to Sokurov would be amazing. We need more Russian/Soviet cinema .

A Pre-Order went up for another REDEMPTION title KILLER'S MOON http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Killer...Blu-ray/35715/ Currently at $13.99, anyone know if there will be other titles by Redemption for March?

I just found VIRGIN WITCH also a new pre-order!

Surprised by all but not really all that excited with the exception of the Redemption releases and This is Not a Movie . That is by far the most surprising title. A somewhat obscure recent Mexican film released by Kino? That's quite amazing but good news non-the-less. I am beating myself for not catching it up in theaters when I had the opportunity .

I received my review copy a few days ago and I'm on my third viewing right now. When you guys purchase this movie, you may want to set it to the "Full English translation" subtitles, otherwise the automatic subtitles that will show is Godard's "Navajo" English which was shown at Cannes and not a full translation.

I watched it with the Navajo at first and then the full English subtitles. And I am going to watch it for a third time.

I'm used to Godard's socio-political films but this one, was rather intriguing and I literally had to peruse other reviews of film critics that I respect to get their take on it. And possibly the most intriguing take on the film is by Richard Brody of the New Yorker.

As for questions of it's worth a blind buy. It's rather subjective, but it depends how familiar you are with Godard. Of course, you can watch a lot of his '60s films from Criterion but assuming you have watched many of his films past 1966, two videos that are accessible from Criterion such as "Made in U.S.A." and "Tout va Bien". How did you feel about those two films?

I can tell you that if you look at the various reviews of this film, even the film critics have a different take. Some found it incomprehensible, others found it magnificent.

So far, I found this film to be rather intriguing and a Godard film that entices the viewer to do their own research as each fragment of the film has a socio-political meaning.

With the "Navajo" subtitles, I felt I was missing the point. Watching the full English translation (Which I'm grateful for Kino Lorber for including), I found it to be much more easier to watch and understand. But felt that I had to do additional research as I'm not an erudite of European conflicts, especially if it deals with the past (if what Richard Brody has wrote is what the film is actually about). And now, having spent some time getting an idea of what Godard is possibly trying to communicate, I want to watch it for a third time.

I have added a few Kinos to my collection the past week. I try to stock up when B&N has their 40% off all blu-ray sales:

Seven Chances
Go West/Battling Butler
Rapt
A Farewell to Arms
The Birth of a Nation
Boccaccio '70

Last night I watched Seven Chances. It is quite short, slightly under an hour, but the disc also includes a 3-Stooges short based on the same story concept as Seven Chances, and a short from 1904 that was the basis for the bride chase scene.

I found the opening 2-strip technicolor sequence to be in rough shape with a lot of shimmer and color shifting. Once the film goes to B&W after these initial few minutes, however, the PQ is a revelation. It has a pleasingly warm sepia look to it. The depth of field in each frame is startling. I was really amazed at the clarity of distant objects.

Another thing I find amazing is Keaton's athleticism. The boulder scene is one of the best sequences in the film and Keaton is running and dodging, jumping and tumbling, all the way. He is in constant motion for the last half of the film.

I thought the same thing about Douglas Fairbanks in The Black Pirate. His athleticism is continually on display, especially his leaping ability, like when he jumps flat-footed up multiple stairs. In the film, Fairbanks' face looks middle-aged while his body and movements are those of a younger athlete, so I googled him and found out he was 42 or 43 when he made the movie.

I am fairly new to silents, but one thing that stands out to me is the physical affinity of many of the actors for stunts and gymnastics. These guys were action studs.

Come and See would be a great surprise too ! It seems Kino is waiting to release the true juggernuts but with so much awesome in their catalogue I find this troubling . Also, thanks for the above .

Come and See, Dersu Usala and The Mirror have all been promised for 2012. Quite a long time ago, to be honest.
