Spartacus - 50th Anniversary Edition on May 25th - Blu-ray Forum

Just heard that Spartacus - 50th Anniversary Edition is coming to Blu-ray (hopefully a better print than the HD DVD) on May 25th. It will be a single-disc edition.

Special features will include:

Deleted Scenes
Interview with Peter Ustinov
Interview with Jean Simmons
Behind-the-Scenes Footage
Vintage Newsreels
Theatrical Trailer
Production Stills
Concept Art
Costume Designs
Saul Bass Storyboards

I have always like the special Criterion edition but will cross my fingers this will be great. It's too bad this doesn't have the Dalton Trumbo commentary.

Cool! I remember seeing this movie a couple times growing up. I have not seen it for a few years.

The lack of commentary sucks, but as long as it looks better than the HD-DVD which was a major disappointment, I'll pick it up.

Yes, definitely waiting for (several) reviews on this one before picking it up. The HD-DVD was disappointing.

The Criterion also had a section on composer Alex North that I don't see with the Universal release. I agree it is going to be a check-the-reviews for me, too. I really hope they remaster this completely. But knowing Universal...

Well, sadly Universal doesn't have a great track-record with redoing Discs.. Most BD Re-releases have been HD-DVD portings.. Let's just hope they give Spartacus the attention it deserves

I'm glad this is coming to Blu-ray. I hope the transfer is a big improvement over the HD version.

Actually none of the Universal Re-releases have been ports of the HD-DVD encodes. They are all new encodes with higher bandwidths. This issue is the HD Masters. They are earlier HD masters that were done for DVD. Several of the films need restoration work and new HD masters need to be done.

I'm pleased about the announcement although I suppose it was a pretty obvious choice as it's the 50th anniversary.
