Default Cast Away/Field of Dreams transfers: How bad?

These are two titles I have wanted to add to my collection and it stands out like a sore thumb in my mind every time I hit the stores. I read so-so "official" reviews about soft images in Cast Away. Appearently, the image is dissapointing, yet I see a lot of 4's and some 4.5's given by users. I see even lower ratings for Field of Dreams, which is really a shame. I guess the big question is: do they have good enough transfers to beat DVD, let alone an upconverted one?

Castaway is definitely worth it, just know that if you have the 2-disc DVD, the bluray has zero special features carried over and if that's your thing, hold on to that second disc . I can't comment on Field of Dreams since I haven't seen the blu.

Is FIELD OF DREAMS due for a remaster of the original film elements? You bet. Does the Blu-ray, nevertheless, blow the DVDs out of the water? You bet.

I personally thought Cast away looked and sounded good on blu. Not the best but worth the $10 price tag. The movie is fairly quiet and doesn't have much in the way action scenes. I just need to hear him talk clearly with Wilson and that's it

IMO, Cast Away looks better than Field Of Dreams, but both are nice upgrades over the DVD.

Inside the cargo jet while it was going down was an EXPERIENCE.
Because Calamari Marionette Ph.D sounded pompous, that's why.

Cast Away is worth it for the lossless audio track alone.

Yeah but I have a feeling they'll double dip it. It lacks the extras of the special edition on DVD. A lot of the early Fox releases lack the extras and I expect a double dip just like the early DVDS got double dipped. The only early Fox movie I don't see getting a double dip is I,Robot because they got everything on the dvd and the audio & video have very good reviews.

Wow that's quite a lot. Now I'm wondering if I should even bother getting it.

I agree Cast Away has a good transfer. Probably could have been better, but was really impressed by the sound and the outdoor scenes on the island.
The book says we may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.

I actually can't recommend either title.

CASTAWAY isn't very detailed. In fact, it has a murky quality to it. I was surprised I was less than impressed with the audio. While it's not bad, again, it's not very detailed.

FIELD OF DREAMS, I don't get Universal and this one? Even from the DVD days, this title has not been done right! The HD DVD was so bad I traded it, rented the BD, same story (except for the lossless track). The video is murky and poorly detailed. The audio is very compressed sounding. Not even the score (which is a favorite by the way) is detailed.

I thought Cast Away looked great. The pro reviewer on here loved it too, for the most part. Check the user reviews too. It got very favorable video quality reviews, except from a couple people, who, from their reviews, it's quite clear they have very unrealistic expectations on what Blu-rays should look like. They're expecting perfect, grain free quality.
"Does the Blu-ray version of '.......' look better than it's DVD version?"

I'm so sick of this question. 99% of Blu-rays look better than their DVD counterpart. Period.

Don't have "Field of Dreams," but I feel "Cast Away" is definitely worth it if you love the movie. I too, was most impressed by the sound.

Default Thanks for the input

I purchased both Field of Dreams and Cast Away, but have only watched Field of Dreams. I find that even though I think it certainly does need a restore/remaster, it looks noticably better than the DVD.

I think you'll like "Cast Away" also...I was skeptical at first, especially considering how good the dvd was, but again, the sound is just amazing, and the picture, while not a huge upgrade, is still improved...
