I really enjoyed the DVD, I haven't watched my BD yet though.
Great homage to the original game IMO, really captured the look of the town and creatures...it also has Radha Mitchell running about dressed in a skirt and boots...what more could you ask?

I think Sean Bean could've made a great James (SH2) character if he had the role even though he was terrible in this one due to constant script changes. I would've loved it if it were simply a retelling of SH2, complete with the alternate bizarre endings

I have the US release and the German release. I like them. Some like the PQ a little better on the German release but they don't look dramatically different to me. The US release has PCM, the German release has DTS HD HR so the audio should be better on the US release (I don't recall what I thought about it when comparing them).

*The best version, which even eclipses the German and is extremely English friendly.

I was actually pissed when I saw the review on Blu-Ray.com from the critic. I watched it and thought it looked quite good. There is picture sound with grain, but has a lot of detail and has extremely good sound quality. I think that they were being a bit harsh on it.

You have to keep in mind that this was one of the early Sony Blu-ray releases. I actually have the Canadian version because it was cheaper and has better artwork, but the transfer is the same as the U.S. version. Is it reference, absolutely not. Is it decent and much better than the DVD, yeah.
The main issue is that it's a single-layer disc with MPEG-2 coding. Because of the space and compression constraints, the picture isn't as good as it could be. The intended look of the film is somewhat dreamy and stylized, however daylight scenes look a lot better than dark scenes (of which there are obviously quite a few). Detail suffers in night scenes and things turn into kind of a blackout, likely due to less advanced compression. Is it worth a buy, probably if you like the movie. I suppose we might see a rerelease if the sequel ever happens. |

I'd give it a 3/5 for video. I caved and bought the U.S. release on Christmas for $15. It was released in the early days of Blu-ray. It does need a better release. Import it.

Definitely isn't the best PQ around but the story of it is great I thought. I play silent hill games and watching the movie is, I would put it as . . . pretty damn good for a game to movie . . . hoping they can make a Silent Hill 2!!
Got a PS3 with a 32" 720p HDTV. That's all for now lolz.

I will third this. The double disc French release from Metropolitan is, for lack of a better term, "ballin". Even if a/v quality was equal to the U.S. (which it's not--it beat it hands down in video; for audio I'd say a dead heat with the U.S. PCM vs. the French's DTS MA), it would still be worth it for the extensive extras package if you're a fan. We're talking PIP video commentary, exhaustive making-of documentary, the works. Region free and english subs on all French language extras. I'd give it serious consideration.

Here's another take on it. It gets 4/5 stars for PQ....it just sounds like it's inconsistant
