proper display position help!!!

any help is greatly appreciated

im moving into a place where the living room is a rectangular but one wall is shorter then the other, so im wondering if its proper to put the tv against the shorter wall and couch along the bigger back wall, or the tv against the bigger back wall, keeping in mind that the back wall has a door to the backyard to the right and the entrance to the kitchen to the left of it

Perhaps you could draw us a diagram and explain how one wall is shorter than the other. Do you mean to say that one wall is a half wall?

I had a similar layout that just never seemed optimal either. With the door entry to our hall on the short wall, we put the tv and stand there and couch on the longer wall, but our longer wall is cut short as well by a built in cabinet and fireplace setup. and having banks of windows on the long wall and the far wall with no doors kinda forced us into a slightly off center setup.

Do you have surround sound setup? If not, Id put the TV flush on the short wall with the couch on the long wall, since you wouldnt have to worry about left and right speakers being on the side even with the TV. If so, I'd probably do the same thing, but set back a bit...

I'll post a pic or how I would set it up. If you do it this way, you'll need to black out the window on the back wall if there is one, or you'll get some killer glare.

That is what we ended up doing like your attachment, we put heavy curtains up with roman shades underneath to really block out the light. The downside was adjusting all the speakers to not sound like everything was off center. Again not optimal in our case but in yours it may work well.

I would rather of put the tv on the longer wall due to the fact that down the road moving to a bigger tv really pinches the space in a small wall. But to do that it would be on a stand rather then wall mounted. With 2 young kids, everything is nailed down or tacked to a wall.

What I would do is put the tv on a stand and put the couch in position and try a few spots to what feels the most comfortable to you because with paint diagrams we can all only assume so much.

im not worrying about upgrading tv size because im only living there for 3 years while im in school

also i am getting 5.1 sound
i can only put it on the long or short wall not the walls that have doors it would be too narrow

also i am planning on getting a stand not mounting it too the wall
