Great thread!!
I have gotten Band of Brothers, Payback (which includes both cuts) and Goonies from the UK. All movies and special features play on Region A PS3. Some US digibooks are being released there as well, region free and sans-digibook. Still the same film. Already, I sadly bought US Digibook for $25, now One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the UK just £7.99 --->amazon.com $28.49 Clash of the Titans £9.99-->amazon.com $24.49 Zodiac is £9.99 but only one disc. US is 2 discs and is $20.99, but I have heard the special features are very good, which UK doesn't have. so i have a quick question for you guys... if I buy a UK bluray, what would the effect be on 24p capability. I thought UK blurays were PAL and the standard was 1080p50, so wouldn't it run at 25.something frames per second? So, we would get some hitching, correct? I understand the pull down would mitigate that (right?? haha), but just curious about 24p performance. I really want once on bluray, and there seems to be other great deals

Search for the film on this site first (if UK blu's don't show during search, go to your account, "Site Preferences" under "Settings" and change it), most of the time region info is on the blu's main page. If not, check out this site or an analysis on blubeaver.
The only other caution is to not base your purchasing on anything amazon.co.uk says for region. (Region 2 blu's? )I now have a habit of buying the region-free BFI series discs from amazon.co.uk, when the price is right, and this method hasn't failed me yet. Got the Bill Douglas Trilogy and GAZWRX: Films of Jeff Keen for $38 shipped last week.

I have a US Region A PS3 and it plays the UK Bourne movies and extras with no problem. Same with the HP years 1-6, same with the BSG complete series. If you use a MC to check out on Amazon UK, you can use their currency converter which will charge your card in US dollars. This will let you know the exact price you will be paying. Word of caution, it does not work with AMEX. Not sure about Visa. Amex runs it as GBP and you will have to figure conversion and AMEX will charge conversion fee.

Nice thread! There's also a Buy 2 for £18 sale going on, with in it some titles like Inglourious Basterds, Public Ennemies and Last House on the Left. These are all region free and much cheaper than on Amazon US, if you calculate that it would come down to £9 a piece.

Blu-ray spec is 1080p24. PAL is a DVD broadcasting specification and 1080p50 is also a broadcasting specification. So all you need to worry about when buying a blu from across the ocean is whether it will play on a Region A player (those typically sold in North America). Blu's are sometimes region encoded as A, B or C or some combination; region free typically meaning it is encoded as A,B,C. |

Incorrect. It can also have video at 50Hz (576i, 576p, 720p and 1080i). If a Blu-ray has such material, in order to play it you will need a player and display that support those refresh rates (or a player that converts to 60Hz). So that's a factor in addition to region encoding. |
