Last night, I didn't get too much sleep. I played around with my HT equipment and did a lot of crazy things, including adding ferrite cores to some cables, changing balanced and unbalanced cables, moving the subwoofers around, and calibrating the sound with my SPL meter.

As I mentioned in my post #13, by using the new Behringer EPX3000 to power my two Hsu subwoofers, I freed up two channels of the 6-channel Cinepro amplifier. One of the other crazy things I did last night was to bridge the two unused channels into the front speakers. As a result, each front speaker receives 800 watts per channel into 8 ohms (1100 watts into 4 ohms) with a peak power of 1,000 watts into 8 ohms.

Now, you can understand why my utility bill was $450 last month.

I received my second set of Samson S-Convert to use with the Behringer EPX3000. As I mentioned in post #8, I use the EPX3000 to power two upgraded Hsu cylindrical subwoofers. The subs are placed in the middle of the side walls.

Before I hooked up the new Samson S-Convert, I had to turn the two gain levels on the amplifier all the way up to their maximum point. Even that was not enough and the SPL reading from each sub could not reach more than 73dB and the amplifier's LED's hardly came on.

After I hooked up the S-Convert, the amplifier's LED's were coming on to the point of clipping. I had to significantly lower the amplifier's gain levels. They are around the 20%-30% now and when I play test tones through the subwoofers, they easily average around 75dB to 80dB.

I had similar experience with the Behringer EP4000 and my other two subwoofers. The conclusion I have reached is that the S-Convert is almost a necessity when you are hooking up consumer unbalanced (RCA) outputs to professional balanced (XLR or TSR) inputs. You can find more information about the Samson S-Convert in post #1.

This is vary interesting . so it would be best to get the S-Convert with the EPX3000 to power my two subs . I will definitely keep this in mind for this summer & Thanks Big Daddy .

what would be a good passive sub to use in conjunction with either the ep2500 or epx3000, budget is about 800-1000 just for the sub, thanks

It was quite easy to buy passive subwoofers for home applications in the 1980's and 1990's. Unfortunately, by the late 1990's, almost all manufacturers started selling active (powered) subwoofers.

I have listed some options for you in the following. If you want the subwoofer completely finished, but without an amplifier, your best bet is TBI or Funky Waves. However, if you are willing to do some DIY work, check Decware, Parts Express, or Elemental Design.

Passive Subwoofers by TBI:

Passive Cylinder & Box Subs:

Passive Subwoofers by Bagend:

Home Theater Direct (HTD):

They sell passive subs, but include the external amplifier.

Pre-built Subwoofers Cabinets by Decware:
They sell passive subs, but include the external amplifier.

The newest pro amplifier in my HT room is a used stereo PylePro PT4000 amplifier that I bought from Ebay for $170. One channel is used to power a relatively flat under-the-sofa 8" subwoofer and the other channel will be used to power a Clark Tacile Transducer that I ordered a couple of days ago. I will post more information and pictures in the future. In the meantime, you can enjoy these pictures:

So today, I scored a practically NIB EP1500 for $130. I will be using the amplifier to power my Image Dynamics iDMAX12 driver (which takes up to 1000w RMS). The 200w of power it is currently getting from the plate amplifier is decent but not as nice as it could be. I can imagine there will be a noticable difference in SQ with the loads of additional headroom. In fact, there's going to be so much leftover headroom, I may build/order another passive enclosure for the 13Ov.2 driver I have sitting around.
My recommended setup for Home Theater Virgins:

Speakers: Polk Monitor 50's, Polk Monitor 40's, Polk CS2 Center, and eD subwoofer or
HTIB: Polk 5.1 system and
Receiver: Non-Network Onkyo TX-SR608 or Onkyo HT-RC180 Network Receiver
Monoprice-For all your cable needs...

I use the EP2500 in my bedroom setup (pics in profile). I think I will change the fan because it's a little loud.

This amp is so powerful.. my lights were dimming when I was using it in the living room. I moved the amp to the bedroom and put a XPA5+upa2 in the living room.. never saw the lights dim again..

Good luck with changing the fan. It will probaly cost you less than $20 and about half an hour to replace the fan. All the links are in post #1.

yeah thanks.. I'm printing it as we speak.

You were talking about the Samson line converter and the fact that it is used for boosting the signal. I currently use RCA to 1/4 cable without any issue. Would it be the same to boost the signal on the receiver? like giving a boost to both L & R channels?

thanks

I may not be able to get the same fan, do they print how many DBs each fan is producing on the packaging?

The Samson converts the unbalanced (RCA) to balanced (XLR or 1/4 TRS) and boosts the signal at the same time. With a basic RCA to XLR or TRS cable, the signal is still unbalanced and you need to boost the signal in the receiver.

Some computer fans are very quiet. Unfortunately, you cannot use them as they are 12 volts. The Behringer amplifier uses a 24 volt fan. The fan from DigiKey has the correct dimensions and is also 24 volts. The noise rating is 21 dB and published in the following link.

sorry for what may seem like a stupid question to all the electricly savvy people. I've never dealt with a pro amp before so I'm a little swamped with info...

I'm seriously considering getting the Behringer EP4000 to power 2 THT subs

I looked at the power draw of the EP4000 and it lists it as 2600 watts....

if I'm not mistaken you'll flip your breaker at 2400 watts in your house (at 20A, mine are actually 15A so that gives me a little less watts to run my receiver, projector and player and subs on)... how are people using this baby without upgrading to a 30 amp breaker ??? or should I knock it down to the EP2000

...Mini DSP EQs, Anti-Mode, Audyssey Sub EQs, Behringer EQs, Rane EQs, Soundcraftsmen EQs, Digital Parametric ones, Analog Graphic ones, ... ALL EQs?

...Would be real cool!

You should be ok with a 15 amp circuit. It is very rare that you may need a lot of power continuously. My EP4000 is on a 15 amp circuit and drives two subwoofers effectively without any problems.

You may want to consider EPX3000 instead of EP4000. The main reason I recommend EPX3000 is because it has RCA and XLR connectors. EP4000 does not have RCA inputs. Check post #1 for additional information and links.
