Default Cooling Fan

The cooling fan mod (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...Name=P14751-ND) work well, but I will add that this fan should be mounted with the label facing in as opposed to the stock fan's label out. It also does not push quite as much air, so somebody running this amp at a 2 ohm load over an extended period may run into problems. It definitely makes the amp VERY quiet though. So quiet, that I ordered two of the 12V versions of this same fan (http://search.digikey.com/us/en/prod...746-ND/2615559) for my computer to quiet it down.

Thanks for the post Big Daddy.

BD, Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, as I researched 2-channel amps when building my basement system and found most are more than my budget allowed (kids in college etc...). I stumbled upon pro-amps and did not know exactly how they may function for HT use. I ending up with an HK 3490 (refurb on ebay)and use it as an amp to power the mains. This system consists of an AVR powering the center and sides and I now wish to add rears. The plan is to purchase a pro amp and off load the sides. The AVR will then power only the center and rears. I have narrowed it down to a few models and will report back when I purchase.

I am thinking about getting either QSC GX5 or Behringer EPX4000 to power up my RTI A9s.
Samson S-Convert is not available on the link you have provided in your first post. What would be an alternative converter to Samson?

This is a great alternative to the S-Convert. I use the earlier model (Art CleanBox. The one I linked is the CleanBox Pro. Evidently has a FR lower than the non pro). It's worked great for me so far. Signal is weak and unusable with just RCA but this brings it up nicely and cleanly.

Edit: Also I vote for the EPX4000 or if I can throw the Crown XLS series in the mix. Absolutely love my XLS1500. 300w/ch @ 8 ohms and weighs in at a whopping 11 pounds! Absolutely amazing. Can't say much for the QSC as i bought one refurbrished and it did nothing but hiss and whine so i exchanged it for my XLS, soooo glad I did with the reduction in weight. Just my $.02 though.
My Current Setup:
Receiver:
Onkyo TX-NR818 Amps: Crown XLS 1500 (Mains), Dayton Audio APA150 (Bridged Mono for Center), Dayton Audio SA230 (Sub) TV: Samsung UN46F6400 Front L/R Speakers: Polk Audio Monitor 70's Center Speaker: Polk Audio CS2 Rear L/R Speakers: Polk Audio Monitor 30's Sub: 1 DIY 12 Inch Sealed sub Blu-Ray/Gaming: PS3 Slim 120GB Other Movies/music: Custom built desktop computer

I power my RTI A9's with a QSC GX-5 and my CAIA6 with a QSC GX-3 (one channel). I was split between a ART Clean box pro (x2) and a Berhringer Ultra 4000. I opted for a Berhringer Ultra 4000 because I had a bit of a ground loop issue and this unit has a ground lift option. It has worked great so far. The unit can also convert up to 4 channels.

Thanks for the link and recommendations. I think I will be going with Behringer EPX4000 as it provides 530w @ 8ohms on both channels and it is same, if not cheaper than comparable QSC or Crown.

Hmm looks like thats another good option, I might just go with that one as I will be getting my Polk Audio CSI A6 soon.
However, I am a little confused with the setup. Is it going to be something like: Receiver>Converter>Amp>Speaker?
Receiver: Onkyo TX NR-818
Fronts: Polk Audio RTi A9s
Sub: Polk Audio PSW10

Thumbs up

Hello. You will need RCA to XLR from the AVR pre-outs to the DI-4000 input (unbalanced). The Berhringer Ultra DI-4000 converts the unbalanced signal to a balanced signal. I used a Monoprice snake cable, XLR to XLR, from the DI-4000 outputs to the amps. Then speaker wire from the amps to the speakers.

Assuming that all the components are working worperly, my guess is that the dip switches on the back of EP4000 are not set correctly or there is a problem with the XLR to RCA cables. Go back and read Post #1. Pay attention to the section on dip switches.

Also, there is a significant difference between the output level of RCA and XLR. You may need an XLR to RCA converter. Unfortunately, Samsung no lo longer manufacturers the S-Convert. Howeve, there are other manufacturers such ART and Rolls. The converter boxes are not very expensive. Amazon and most pro shops carry them.

Put the CleanBox between the receiver and the EP4000.
  1. RCA cable from the receiver to RCA input on the back of the Cleanbox.
  2. XLR cable from Cleanbox to XLR input on the back of EP4000.

You can use these amps to power subs and speakers for half the price of an emotiva amp? I'm confused how is this possible? There must be some kind of a build quality or power quality component compromise here. I thought emotiva amps were as cheap as they come for performance and build quality. Also I thought the power ratings on these pro amps were marketing numbers.

Looking at emotiva XPA-2 and the behringer EPX4000 they both offer a lot of power per channel for a two channel amplifier at 8 ohms but one is almost three times the size and weight than the other. And when I looked at the internal components the emotiva XPA 2 looks vastly superior to the behringer which looked cheap and bare like nothing but small parts were used. I don't get how the behringer EPX 4000 can give that much power without bursting into flames or for a long period of time without clipping easily

I am now a firm believe that pro audio amps can be used in consumer theater setups with great success and not blow up or uin your speakers as I originallyw thought. Just never understood how such a tiny and INEXPENSIVE amplifier could give you soo much power!

This pro amp review did it for me! Way to go Crown!
