I have it on HD-DVD, and would be surprised if it isn't the exact same transfer released on Blu (since it is a Warner title).
It was 2.35 or 2.37:1... I can't remember off the top of my head, but definitely in that neighborhood.
The Forum is about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell.

2.35:1 should be the correct aspect ratio. 2.55:1 was the original CinemaScope ratio, but was reduced to 2.35:1 in 1954, a year before Forbidden Planet went into production.

FP is one of the finest SF movies ever made, bear in mind the year it was made and check out some incredible effects; way ahead of their time. The visuals are amazing and the story itself is fantastic, genuinely creepy and thought provoking. There's a reason why this is a classic and is getting a blu-ray release! Buy it and enjoy a real sci-fi treat |

Gentlebeings;
Forbidden Planet was actually filmed in CinemaScope 55 with an aspect ratio of 2.55:1 and magnetic 4-track stereo sound. However only a few theaters could show it that way, so M-G-M made most prints as cropped to 2.35:1 and with Perspecta™ stereo sound — a totally discarded process that FAKES stereo. When a DVD — ANY DVD — says that it enhanced for 16x9 TVs it is in the 2.35:1 ratio no matter what else is claimed on the box even if it says "original aspect ratio". If your player is one the the zoom functions are capable of reduction then use it; you might be surprised at how much more you can see! (It varies from movie to movie.) For a near complete course on movie aspect ratios color processes (FP would have looked marvelous in Techniclolor™!) go to this excellent site: http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/ Sincerely, Robert Earl (Butch) Day PhD, DSc, DLitt, LLD (Hon) |

To: retablo;
It is NOT misinformation. I spent 9 years in the motion picture business making SFX models and effects while going to college. Go to the site I listed and check for yourself before making such statements. To: Douglas R: Nowhere did I state the film used, so I am bewildered about the 35mm format statement. Forbidden Planet was not a roadshow attraction, hence it did not use 65mm or 70mm. Various widescreen formats have been around since almost from the beginning, with the most familiar (CinemaScope™) since about 1927. To: All; My info about Forbidden Planet's aspect ratio, color and sound come directly from Martin Hart (the site's administrator) after I emailed him. Before anyone makes any kind of statement please use our equivalent to the Krell library — the internet — and do thorough research. DON'T take what is written by advertisment copywriters on their word alone. |

That's not what people are referring to as misinformation.
It is your erroneous statement about "enhanced for widescreen TV" which actually means that a 16:9 frame, which can contain any aspect ratio image from pillar boxed 1.66:1 to letterboxed 2.7:1 (and beyond), is anamophically squeezed into a 4:3 visible frame (stored in non-linear pixels in a 5:4 data frame) Quote:
