The diameter of the wire is the difference.
Less than 80 feet 16 awg ,80 to 200 feet 14 awg, More than 200 feet 12 awg is recommended .

So the longer amount of wire I would use per speaker, the lower the #?

The longer of run of speaker wire The thicker it should be . All But my 3 front speaker cables are 12AWG & that includes the speaker wire running to my three subs .

Golden Rule: When you increase the gauge number of a wire by a factor of 3, its resistance will be doubled. For example, the resistance of an 18 gauge speaker wire is 4 times higher per foot in comparison to a 12 gauge wire (18 is 6 points away from 12).

I did and it might as well be written in Japanese. It would be helpful if he could explain it in simpler terms to a idiot like me when it comes to this stuff.

Just buy 12 gauge for everything. The difference in price is very small.

This is the one I use .

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

The difference in them is how you hook the wire to them . The ones I use in the link are rather simple & work well .

Can you use those to connect to a receiver as well or just to the speaker?

Awesome. Thanks to both you and Big Daddy. Been very helpful. I had a HTIB (Onkyo HTS 6100 but sold it to a friend) but want to put together my own HT piece by piece (probably will get a Onkyo/Pioneer/Yamaha receiver and Polk speakers/sub).

Good luck with the Build Wingman . Piece by piece is the only way to do it
