Xbox 360 slim, Oh its true

Packing a black-finished case with prominent cooling vents, the new machine -- nicknamed the Xbox "Slim" by fans -- will retail for $299, the same price as the current 120 GB Xbox 360 Elite system. It will be compatible with all Xbox 360 games and hardware, with the exception of old-style external hard drives and memory cards.

It's not any more powerful, but the redesigned 360 nevertheless addresses a number of recurring gripes with the existing design: aside from being smaller, it's quieter, includes built-in super-fast 802.11n wireless networking, and packs an internal, replaceable 250 GB hard drive.

It's also equipped with a smaller power supply, a dedicated connector for Microsoft's upcoming Kinect motion control system, and five USB ports. A matching black wireless controller will ship with the system.

i saw a video that featured the new 'slim' but it didnt seem all that 'slim' to me. i guess m$ is still not going to let people use a sata drive

I seen videos of it from engadget! It looks great. Do I want it? Hell Yes! Will I Buy It? Hell No, because I just got the 250 GB Splinter Cell Bundle a couple months ago and I sure as hell won't get the money back that I paid for it. It was freakin' $399!

My original died about 6 months ago and I refused to buy a replacement until the slim was lauched due the the hardware failures of the past. I returned my launch system 5 times in the past and the warranty finally ran out on my last system and now my Xbox just freezes up on boot. Here to hoping that the hardware failures are fixed when the slim arrives that I ordered from Amazon..

The 360 slim looks quite sexy! I haven't touched my 360 in over a year but looks like I will be back in the 360 business with this. I'll probably go ahead and pick up Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2 while I'm at it.

i gave up on my launch system after the second rrod. then i sold it only to buy an arcade 1.5 yrs ago. been working good.

I'm with you. It is noticeably slimmer, but not what I would consider to be a "slim" unit by any stretch.

It's lame that you can't do your own hard drive in there, but totally understood. Cool deal that they're coming with larger drives now, though. I got the Elite for Christmas, and I don't think I've used more than about 30GB. Almost all of that is Rock Band DLC.

what takes up most of my space (besides the hd episodes of trek i bought waaayyy back when) is game installs. i like playing from the hdd rather than the disc.

I still haven't gotten into that. The only reason I'd do that is to save on some noise coming from the console. Is there a noticeable difference when playing from the hard drive? I mean, you still need the disc to play the game, so I would think that it's not a ton quieter. Again, I haven't experienced it, so I'm just guessing here.

I never have installed the game on the HD either - probably b/c I still only have the original 20 gig HD. I don't play that much though. I must admit though, the new one looks good. If my white launch one ever goes out, I'd pick up the slim.

I know people who returned theirs over 10 times. Mine was still under warranty so I kept getting it repaired. Looks like I will sell it for the parts and apply it towards the new one.

ive been doing it for so long but i think loading times are a bit faster. yes you need the disc but it only spins when verifying that its in the console. otherwise, it wont spin. its to verify that you do indeed have a physical copy of the game on not sharing or pirating. saves on wear and tear/heat.

mine was under warranty and the first rrod at 7 months. the replacement rrod a week after i got it. that was enough for me. i dont normally return to brands that fail me. but dammit, im a gamer. so i returned eventually after over a year or two. i have more faith in the newer models. my first ps3 ylod after my warranty was up. i paid to get it fixed. its been good since i got it a couple yrs ago but i dont use it like i did the first one. a lot less. bought a stand alone for movies.

I've heard about faster load times, which I would not mind at all! To be honest, the load times don't really bug me all that much, but the sounds coming from the system definitely does. I think I'll go ahead and try that this week...so the disc is only spun and accessed one time, and that is right when you first start the game? If it's only used then to verify, that's pretty cool. I have my console outside of my entertainment center, so I'm not terribly concerned with overheating, but using the disc drive less is probably a nice thing to keep the hardware usage hours down.

try and see if you like it. personally i dont play disc games without it.

at the risk of being booed and hissed at again or maybe not becuase this is the 360 thread......... i want the ps3 to have the same function. they could easily update the ps3 for this and make it secure in a similar way. and it makes more sense since most people upgrade thier drives with very huge ones.

I'm on my 8th replacement (6 RRoDs + 1 DVD-ROM drive failure). This last time, I had them return me a newer 360 (falcon chipset) than the same ole launch system version that had been dumping on me for the past however many years. I had to talk to the folks at Redmond to make it happen, but they sent me a "newer" version (NOT a brand new one mind you). But given HDMI capability and a less-RRoD-prone chipset, my morale was boosted greatly. That and I have yet to spend 1 red cent on repairs - all 7 repairs have been free of charge to me even though it's looooong out of warranty. At least M$ did the right thing on this. That's my experience at least. On the other hand, the 60GB PS3 I got at launch and have only ever used as a BD/DVD player gave me the YLoD a month ago. I fixed it myself with a YouTube video, heat gun, and some thermal compound for free as opposed to $ony's decision to not fix this problem on their own nickel. But oh well...at least all of my problems have been free of charge.

Sorry to hijack the thread...I dig the look of the new 360.
