Thanks..I had a feeling it was just called something different. I enjoy it and always throw some on top of my rice. We also have something called Hong Kong chicken which looks spicy the sauce is a deep red almost like sweet and sour sauce but it is superb and def isn't spicy. Very sweet!

Maybe you know it as Kung Pao chicken? The difference between this and General Tso's is that Kung Pao has peanuts in it. The base for the sauce is essentially the same at American Chinese take-out restaurants, i.e. once you've tried one chicken dish, you've tried them all.

Very good point...I am usually sick of chicken by the end of my meal.

It may have to do with the fact that i) the chicken pieces are coated in a heavy batter, then fried, and ii) the chicken is usually laden with a thick, overly sweet sauce. I guess it's something that American diners have come to expect and some have grown to love (so much so that they dislike any offerings from mainland China, or even Hong Kong), but nothing could be further from true Chinese cooking.

Little known fact: General Tso's Chicken may be the most well-known Hunan dish, but you will be hard-pressed to find anyone from the Hunan province of China that is familiar with it. General Tso's is a Taiwanese creation back in the '70s, first offered in New York by Taiwanese restauranteurs.

Tonights menu:

Tournedos!! I dunno what its called in America.. Filet mignon?? Anyway - its my favourite meal in the world! The meat is sooo good.. 2 inches thick and with a piece of bacon wrapped around.. Fried on the pan in butter! Potatoes sliced in half, with oil and spices and then baked in the oven! Red cabbage on the side and some good red wine!

Can't wait

Not only the addition of peanuts & actual whole red peppers, I also find the Kung Pao sauce a lot lighter than the Generals. There's times when I order it extra spicy! It's my all time fav Chinese sauce.

No problemo. Just switch proteins. For example, Kung Pao shrimp is scrumptious. And to kick it up even more notches, add scallops. Mmm, mmm, good.

True. The General Tso chicken is an example of battered and fried chicken, covered in a thick sauce. When I order my Chinese, wether take-out, or dine-in, I always specify white meat. It costs a few bucks more, but you're not getting anything battered and it's worth it.

One of my favorite chinese restaurants, has this incredible fresh veggie bar. You sit down, tell the waiter what sauce (kung Pao for me) and what protein (usually chicken or shrimp for me). Then you get a good sized red bowl, and fill it up with all your favorite fresh veggies from the veggie bar. Then give your fresh veggies to the chef and he stir-frys it with your choice of sauce and protein. Soooo good. The down side is, it's a little spendy. I don't go as much as I'd like.

Oh yeah, the beef tenderloin. That there is some good eating. I haven't had a steak in far too long. Need to get on that.

I have the munchies, but I don't want chips and stuff like that. So I'm thinking some crackers, Brie Cheese and Pickled Herring.

yeah, Kung po sauce and General tso sause is quite different, if they both taste the same at a certain Chinese restaurant, it must be a really low-rent establishment, lol... I bet the rat tastes just like chicken there, too...

Wabo, I find that the Chinese really don't understand the concept of "hot" foods when it comes to spicy - I can never get my chinese food to be hot enough for me spice-wise, no matter if I tell them to make it as hot as they can possibly make it... I suppose it's because Habanero peppers don't grow in China...

I love me some good BBQ chicken, and I didn't feel like cooking so I picked one up at work (Costco). Just put it in the oven to get it nice and warm again, and some broiler time for that extra skin-crispy deliciousness.

I'm gonna eat the whole damned thing!

I was in the mood for rotisserie chicken yesterday and I was close to picking one up, but I passed because I didn't want to deal with the clean-up afterwards, more specifically, washing the cutting board and knife. Gawd, I'm lazy.

LOL! I'm like that too during the week. I need me one of them "wenches" to clean up after me!

The bread really does make or break the sandwich. And that looks pretty darn awesome! Some melted Provolone would seal the deal for me.
