Yeah but what team would trade him for a one year rental? Especially a disgruntled Howard? What other options do the Magic really have?

He has no leverage. If the Magic don't deal him to the Nets Deron Williams will just bolt to the Mavs, which I expect he will do. Once that happens it's Dwight's options that narrow. Right now I think only Houston is willing to trade for Dwight with no assurances of him re-signing. But even Houston has much better trade assets than the Nets do.

Orlando should just keep Howard or suspend him. I'd rather have massive cap room next year rather than the crap players the Nets have.

Howard to Houston. Now that's a press conference I'd love to see.

This whole thing still blows my mind. Up until this past year I'd assumed if Dwight eft Orlando it would be because of the team being unable to build a winner around him. I was sure he'd want to go to someplace like LA or Chicago where a ready made winner would be available. But it's been obvious for some time now that his desired destination of Brooklyn provides no such scenario. Even if Deron Williams re-signs with Brooklyn and Dwight joined them it's at best a mid-level (4-6 seed) team. There's no chance a Nets team with Williams and Dwight could compete with Miami or Chicago in the East in the coming years unless they can somehow sign a lot of talent around them, which is very unlikely. So obviously it's not about winning but something else. But even if the reason for Brooklyn is to play in a big market it still makes no sense since places like LA and Chicago are also huge markets.

There's absolutely no way I can see Orlando even considering trading him to the Nets given how little they have. I'd rather trade him to Houston for their crop of decent young draft picks and maybe some future picks than trade him for Brook Lopez and a bunch of garbage.

Heh... ya never know. Remember how pissed/dejected those guys who got traded from the Clippers to New Orleans looked in their press conference after the Chris Paul deal? That deal ended up working out well for guys like Kamen and Eric Gordon, who may well end up staying long-term and playing alongside Anthony Davis on a very good young team.

From the sounds of it the Magic are in no hurry to trade Howard but Deron Williams is planning on signing a new deal quickly. He is going to meet with the Nets and Mavericks on Monday and make his decision and sign a new deal by Tuesday at the latest. If Williams signs with the Mavs I wonder if Dwight will still want to go to the Nets because they would have arguably the worst roster in the NBA, especially if Gerald Wallace leaves.

Orlando is not going to trade Howard to the Nets. Why should they? I am sure Orlando is going to find the best deal possible (probably Houston) and send him on his way ASAP.

It's being reported that they agreed to a deal with Wallace already.

If the Nets can stage a coup of landing Wallace, Johnson, Williams and Howard, they might actually end up being a decent team this year.

No way they get both Johnson and Howard IMO. They'll be lucky to keep Deron, let alone getting 1 of those two in a trade as well.

i remember reading they traded for Gerald Wallace JUST to have someone decent to trade to Orlando. Howard will go to an awful Nets team if he goes there.

Gerald Wallace, Robin Lopez, and three 1st round picks is the minimum of what i'd ask for if Orlando feels like they MUST trade him there.

If he goes there it'll be him, Deron and a bunch of D-Leaguers.

And that's one of the many reasons why I'd refuse the trade to the Nets. Deron Williams probably does to Dallas and after that Dwight will be pretty much screwed and have to either re-sign or expand his trade destinations.

But they gave the #6 overall pick in this draft to Portland for Gerald Wallace. That was far too much.

yeah i agree. Wallace is good but he's not going to make you a top team even if you have Deron and Dwight. I'd rather have the #6 pick as the third option rather than Wallace and his $10 million a year contract. You could use the additional $7 million saved to actually sign decent role players.

Dwight and Melo are two guys I'll never understand. They leave playoff teams to join worse teams. To say he feels deceived by Orlando is ridiculous. They got rid of their coach and GM to please him.

rundown of what i've read today

-Portland offering Roy Hibbert a max deal.
This will eat up a lot of Indiana's celebrated cap space if they choose to match. This will also mean that Roy will more than likely get injured somehow. Hope not. LOL

-Nash meeting with a bunch of non-contenders today.
-Eric Gordon meeting with Houston and Indiana today.
-Celtics will try to double Miami's offer to Ray Allen.

Geez, Hibbert a max deal?! I know the NBA has a serious lack of big men but that's ridiculous. Hibbert is a decent player but I've seen nothing to suggest he'll be worth that kind of money. He's really only shown marginal improvement over the past few seasons.

I'm not sure what Nash has to play for except a ring. He's accomplished everything except that. Not sure why he'd even bother talking to non-contenders unless he really just wants one last big paycheck.
