I probably sound like a total dork, but:

Can the Sony PS3 120GB or 250 GB record programming from Cable TV?

I think with Play tv in the uk you can, but i,m not sure.

Yes, only in the UK with PlayTV. The U.S. does not have anything I know of to allow recording on a PS3.

torne is a Japanese DVR but just like Play TV, can't work on American PS3s.

Okay, thank you, guys.

That is disappointing, though, that the PS3 can download things from the Net, but it can't record hi-def TV programming.

I guess, for an upgrade, I'll have to stick with a BD recorder.
