Winter's Bone is phenomenal independent movie making. Seriously one of the best movies I've seen this year, and similar in tone to the also excellent Shotgun Stories. Perfectly acted and exceptionally directed. I know I sound like I'm gushing, but it's really quite good.
High-Defamation - Cinematic fiascoes in high definition. Theatrical embarkation and thoughts thereof. Home viewing and hyper-activity.

Weird thing is I went on a road trip through the Ozarks just last October on the way to a family reunion in southern Missouri. Took my time and spent a few days deep in the Ozark mountains. It really is a unique place but there are lots of really creepy mountain people there. This movie definately sounds interesting and looks like it does nothing to alleviate stereotypes of backwoods people.

Ya, most of my family that lives in the Ozarks region is like that. Very distrustful of goverment and outsiders to their regon in general. When I stayed at my uncle's place in the mountains he literally had about 30 guns in the house. VERY paranoid. It's definately one of the more unique regions of the U.S. I've been to.

Winters Bone is indeed a wonderful, haunting tale. Skillfully directed with a real feel for its Ozark locations and culture. Sourced from an even more beautifully crafted novel by on of Americas most under rated novelists, Daniel Wodrell, it is immensly and convincingly evokative of the people and places of the primitive Ozarks. Superbly acted with many spot on performances, my only qualm is that it takes a very nearly mythological, magical story and firmly grounds it in reality. Yet so convincing is the reality that the "magicalness" of the novel is never sorely missed. HIGHLY recommended, Winters Bone will do nothing but advance Ms. Grolnics career and hopefully put her at the top of the "A" list of female directors as well as bring much deserved attention to the regionalist novelist Daniel Wodrell.

I didn't see it during its box office run. I don't know how I missed this one, lol. I am not even sure it hit the theater in my area. The trailer certainly has got me hooked though!
After countless weeks, of uninteresting new titles released on Blu-ray along with an endless barrage of old movie releases, this one looks refreshingly worthwhile. Right now though, I'm thinking about renting first. |
