Arrow ATI 6000 Series Cards Hit This Fall - 5000 Series To Finally Get A Price Cut.

Quote:
The hits just keep coming for NVIDIA. First their Fermi line was six months late to the market, and now they have to push back the launch of the GTS 450. However, it’s a different story altogether for ATI, as not only has the 5000 series been very successful, but they are now on the verge of launching an entirely new line of graphics cards.

Up until now the news regarding the new 6000 series (Southern Island) has not specified an exact time frame for release. We can put the speculation to rest now, as AMD is rumored to announce the new graphics cards in October, and partners should be shipping them to the public in November. So, this gives us just three short months before the 6000 series will be in hand.

While details on the new line are still vague, there are reports coming out the new series will use the current 40nm fabrication process and not the 32nm originally intended. This is due to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) advancing to 28nm and skipping the 32nm process all together. So, AMD had to make the adjustment back to 40nm in order to prevent delays to the new series.

Additional news: AMD plans to cut prices of the 5000 series prior to the 6000 launch. There is not an exact date specified for the price reduction, but it should be happening within the next month or two.
Every article I've seen is vague like this one. No tech specs on the cards, other than they're still using the 40nm that's already found in the 5000 Series. Looks like these might be filler cards before the 28nm (7000 Series?) are released.

I'm sure they'll release full specs soon, so if you do plan to sell, just be sure to dump the 5970 well before the price drop hits.

If the specs aren't mind blowing or at least better then that special edition 5970 then I'm just getting a reduced price 5970

Hopefully they do a better job with the 6-series with keeping them in-stock then they did with the top of the line 5's.

Its funny they have all this momentum yet still have fumbled in some ways.

Ive read the 6000 series isnt a total revamp of the 5000. So it will probably be a slight performance jump. you should keep your 5970, or pick up another

Quad Fire doesn't work with eyefinity yet... Anything over 2 cards just goes badly. I wish they'd do somethign about it, I did want a 5870 but Tri-fire is the worst. Your FPS actually goes down to almost non playable. Useless drivers.

Don't be embarrassed, I use a HD3650. It plays Mirror's Edge, Bioshock and blu-rays all fine and that's good enough for me.

4850's are perfect budget cards to be honest. I bought one when it first came out for $205, and just nabbed another for Crossfire in my new rig. Runs Fallout 3 on Ultra Settings, 4X AA, 12X AF, smoothly, runs BFBC2 on High settings, 2X AA smoothly. Overall awesome cards for price

Well, I've been doing a little research and think I've decided on this card The card is basically overkill for my needs but you never know I might yet find a PC game I like that is not available on PS3. Depending on the pricing after the 6xxx series release - it will likely be a Boxing Day purchase... PC specs in sig

lucv13, are you wondering which one is the better buy?

I wouldn't touch PowerColor cards, but I'm a Gigabyte guy so I'm going to be biased.

Sorry I was editing that mess when you posted - I want to go with a silent card with 2 DVI and Powercolor is the only option at the moment - the Gigabyte silent card is 1 DVI 1 HDMI and 1 VGA you can use any combination for displays except you can't use DVI and HDMI at the same time...

Those Powercolor 5000 series are the only silent ones which have 2xDVI connections on NewEgg that I found. Looks like that's you're only way to go.

Are you 100% positive you cannot use a dvi and hdmi at the same time? They're both essentially the same thing, hdmi just has the added benefit of being able to carry sound. I've never tried that before though. I've only hooked up 2 monitors at once from one card with dvi and vga cables.

99% sure - you can use DVI and VGA or HDMI and VGA but not DVI and HDMI.

Powercolor only has a 2 year warranty though, would prefer lifetime warranty like XFX

I suppose I could use DVI out to TV with SPDIF like I am now(I won't be outputting hi-def audio from the HTPC as I will be getting the Sony 400 disc BD player) VGA to my 22" monitor since it will accept all 3 inputs - back to research...

Do you absolutely need a silent card? Most non-reference ATI cards aren't nearly as loud as vanilla ones.

LOL nope, I actually don't really need to upgrade the current one either as it serves me well - but you know....

lol Then don't blow $180 on that card. I'd suggest just be patient and wait until the price drop. I'm sure you'd be able to get a nice 5850, which are still some of the best price-to-performance ATI cards you can buy.
